The Skull in the Rock
Lee Berger and Marc Aronson have written a fascinating account of Berger's son's discovery of a new species of ape-like creatures that may be direct descendants of humans. I love that they discovered the area they wanted to search by using Google Earth. It's a great hook for me, as many of our students spend their lunch hours pouring over Google Earth in the library. The book consistently engages the reader, either through its gorgeous photos, or by directly encouraging them to think and act like scientists--to train their eyes. There's enough background information provided so that students understand what a significant discovery this was, and Berger and Aronson created a website--www.scimania.org--to share updates. There's also a teacher's resource guide available, so share this book with your teachers who are a bit nervous about finding Common Core aligned resources! This book is appropriate for grades 6 and up, and is highly recommended!
