Tennis Champion Billie Jean King's Diabetes Story

Billie Jean King was an active, fit tennis player for years. But being active and fit isn't always enough to keep you from developing diabetes! She’s won six individual Wimbledon and four U.S. Open titles, founded the Women’s Tennis Association, and still, she now has diabetes. In her case, she suffered from binge eating for many years--she was "hard on her little pancreas" with these activities, and it seems that the consequences of those actions caught up with her later. Still, she has found a way to manage it. King does, and recommends, the following for those looking to live happily with their diabetes: - Continued, regular exercise - Healthy, regular diet - Getting enough sleep - Taking an appropriate medication, if needed, to regulate blood sugar levels - Testing blood sugar 1 to 2 times a day if your levels are typically stable, more if not - Get tested early, just in case. You can save yourself a lot of trouble in the long run.

Athletes with diabetes prove that diabetes doesn't come about from just being lazy and eating too much. People with healthy, active lifestyles get it too!
