Q: If I have breast cancer, is my family also at risk for breast cancer?
It is possible to test whether your breast cancer is due to an inheritable gene, either the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes.
BRCA1 (BReast CAncer gene 1) and BRCA2 (BReast CAncer gene 2) can be tested for using a blood test; ask your doctor if he would recommend taking this test.
People who have these genes have a 60% chance of getting breast cancer, as opposed to the normal chance of 13%. There is also an increased risk for ovarian cancer. However, knowing your BRCA1 and BRCA2 status will help you and your family put preventive measures in place in order to possibly catch any cancer in its early stages.
