Scientists suspect that lack of deep sleep inhibits an important natural process for clearing away beta-amyloid and other toxic clumps of protein from the brain, leading them to build up over time. According to recent mouse research, researchers discovered that the slow brain waves associated with non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM), including three stages including deep sleep, function as an effective form of dishwasher in eliminating protein clumps from mouse brain cells; when mice didn't get enough deep rest however, these cleaning mechanisms became disabled; similar mechanisms could cause human brain cells asleep from engaging their slow wave counterparts which activate this same mechanism and thus leading to amyloid plaque formation or other signs associated with Alzheimer's disease symptoms. Scientists from UC Berkeley conducted an in-depth analysis on data from 62 older adults who had participated in previous studies where they received sleep monitors to wear at home and underwent brain scans that revealed beta-amyloid deposits; those with higher amounts clogged their brains more, while those with less deposits performed significantly better on memory tests that required matching names to faces. Scientists also discovered that those with deeper sleep had reduced amounts of tau, another protein linked to Alzheimer's disease.
