Riding down a rural road, a group of cyclists come across a pitbull off his leash. The pitbull goes after one of the cyclists, but luckily the cyclists react quickly. I wonder what would happen if he fell!?

This is why i carry a spraycan full of deterrent when i ride, in a quick-draw holster in bottleholder #1. Dogs can be scary, owners inattentive. Ugh.

@nokcha Pit bulls make up only 6% of the dog population, but they’re responsible for 68% of dog attacks and 52% of dog-related deaths since 1982, according to research compiled by Merritt Clifton. Now, I am definitely not siding with @spins120 on this, but I think the facts show that pit bull owners need to thoroughly train their dogs in a correct and responsible way. The way the animal is raised is extremely important!

@coffeeman a can of bear-spray.."outdoors-strength" bear repellent pepper spray, marketed toward campers. I often ride in areas where hikers/bikers have been accosted by mountain lions, and my area is full of less-than-great owners of large-breed dogs. Seemed the obvious choice.

@jackmehoff what kind of deterrent are you carrying?

@aracuna I have nothing against the breed of the dog. It didn't necessarily look as though the dog was aggressive, I didn't mean to say "attack". I say the dog almost takes out the rider because the dog didn't see him coming and jumped in front of his wheel. If the cyclist fell, the dog and the cyclists could have been hurt. That is why I asked "I wonder what would happen if he fell". There is not animosity against the breed, but the fact remains that it literally was a pit bull. I have friends with pits and they are generally well behaved. I point out the breed because pits are generally larger dogs, so a collision would likely cripple the bike and injure both the dog and cyclist. Thanks for letting me share the video, I didn't realize people got so defensive of a breed.
