Why Men Can't Buy the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team Jerseys
It is official. It is irrefutable. The U.S. women's national soccer team is the best in the world. So it would be natural for Americans, I mean all Americans, to support their women's national team by wearing their jerseys right? And that's especially true in the world of soccer, because soccer is all about pageantry. What you wear is critical to show true support for your team. And Nike, which is the official sponsor of both the Men's and Women's national soccer team, took in pre-orders just prior to the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. But shortly after the pre-orders were sold out, Nike had to cancel all the orders. Why? The answer lies behind the two stars you see above the crest. These stars represent the number of World Cups that the U.S. women's national team has won (1991, 1995). Now after winning the 2015 World Cup, another star was added to their jerseys. But of course, the men's national soccer team does not have any stars above the crest, because well... they haven't won a World Cup yet. So, Nike decided to cancel the orders for the men's version of the women's national soccer team jerseys because it could give the false impression that the men's team have won those World Cups. What is this nonsense? What should the men and boys, who made up 61% of the 13.5 million viewers that tuned in for the 2011 World Cup finals do? It is such a shame that we still face gender inequality issues and it extends beyond the field. It even applies to fans and their freedom and passion to support their own team. A male fan should be able to wear an Alex Morgan uniform or Abby Wambach's uniform. And who cares if the women's national team won three World Cups and the men's national team hasn't won any? In the end, playing like a girl means you're a badass. What do my sports fans think about this issue? 3 Ways To Get Your Wanderlust Fix On A Budget
For people who don't feel right when their feet have been on the same soil for too long, you understand the hold wanderlust has over you. Looking up flight prices, addicted to hostel world, and the map on your wall is marked with every place you NEED to go to has you feeling all types of pent up and claustrophobic when you are home bound. So you also understand the horror of being landlocked not because you lack a sense of adventure, but because money doesn't grow on trees and neither does time off. However, never fear, because there are some ways to get that wander lust fix in-between trips. 1. Plan weekend trips to places you've never been before. I know leaving the country always seems so much better than staying in your own, but you need to toss that notion aside. Each country has something mysterious, amazing, and shockingly new that you are doing yourself an injustice by not traveling it. Start planning mini trips to states, or your countries equivalent of a state, (I'm from the US clearly haha), and go! It costs a lot less plus going somewhere totally new will feel awesome! 2. Do something you've never done before! Make your current home seem more exciting by doing something you have never ever done before. Adventure is everywhere, you just have to be willing to look! Go rock climbing the town over from you or google the nearest sky diving place. Take a hike on a trail you've never been on or even go camping with friends if you are to use to the city landscape. Mixing up life at home by making your own adventures can help you get a little dose of that travel feeling to remind you that the world truly can be yours. 3. Go out to eat at an authentic restaurant you never tried before. Wander lust is all about new experiences, so if you want to go to India, find a truly authentic Indian restaurant to lose yourself in for a meal. Food is one of the greatest parts about travel, so if you are really tight on a budget, one meal could get you your fix. Just make sure you do some research first to make sure your place can really sell you the culture you wished you were submerged in. Just remember, keep saving and take the plunge, travel is always worth it.
[Ladies' Week] Dara Torres - "Age is Just a Number"
So, @shannonl5 planned this awesome event, "Ladies' Week" (check out ~Announcing: Ladies' Week Event!~ just in case you haven't heard about it!). And in celebration of this awesome event, I wanted to start out with a female athlete that has inspired me: Dara Torres! Just in case you guys have never heard about Dara Torres, she is a former competitive swimmer who is also a twelve-time Olympic medalist and a former world record-holder in three events (50-meter freestyle, 4x100-meter freestyle relay, and 4x100-meter medley relay). But her medals and world records don't capture her whole story. There's more. Torres has competed in five different olympics: 1984 Los Angeles, 1988 Seoul, 1992 Barcelona, 2000 Sydney, and 2008 Beijing. That's right. Five different Olympics over the span of twenty-four years. She was 17 when she competed in her first ever Olympics and she took home a gold medal. She was 41 when she competed in her last one and took a silver medal home. Her life was definitely something you would not call perfect. She was already the oldest member on the U.S. swim team at the age of 33 during the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She could not get pregnant at the age of 35. She was divorced twice by the age of 37. She had her first daughter at the age of 39. Her father also passed away that same year. But as Torres put it perfectly, "But when I was 41 and I woke up in a dorm in the Olympic Village in Beijing, I didn’t feel old. I felt merely—and, yes, happily—middle-aged. ‘The water doesn’t know how old you are.’" For her, age was just merely a number and her dedication and passion for swimming gave her the courage to try out for the 2008 Summer Olympics despite the personal barriers she faced. Torres wasn't quite finished though. After the 2008 Olympics, she underwent a knee surgery, but jumped back in the pool as soon as she was ready to swim once again. And she competed in the U.S. swimming trials to earn a spot on the 2012 London Olympics team for the 50-meter freestyle. She however was denied a spot. Jessica Hardy won first place with 24.50 seconds and Kara Lynn Joyce took the remaining spot. Dara was nine-hundredths of a second behind her sixth Olympics. She was 45 at the time. Even though she did not make it for the 2012 Olympics, she had no regrets, because she gave everything she had. She simply hugged her daughter, Tessa, and congratulated her fellow swimmers. [Video: 2008 Beijing Olympics Women's 4x100 Freestyle Relay Final/Torres's Last Olympic Medal] She has been such an inspiration for me and people all around the world. We sometimes put a limit on ourselves without even giving our best shot. Torres however never, ever made any excuses and simply focused on achieving her goals. I would like to end this card with my favorite Torres quote: "You don't have to put an age limit on your dreams."
Love It Or Hate It: Live Sporting Events?
Welcome to the Funny Community game, Love It Or Hate It! This game is really similar to Monday's 'No Good or So Good' food game - except this one deals a lot more with non-food things. Every week, I highlight a different thing that a lot of people either really love or really hate and see how our community feels overall! Last week, I asked you how you felt about SELFIE STICKS. It was an EXTREMELY tight vote, but out of the 60 who gave your opinion, 33 of you said that they're actually kind of useful! Soooo... SELFIE STICKS WIN!!!! This week, I want to know: How do you feel about attending live sports games? Spectator sports have been around since the days of Ancient Greece, but the ones we know and love today came into being in the mid 19th century! The number of Americans that attend at least one live sporting event annually is easily in the tens of millions. However, the amount of them that find said sporting event COMPLETELY BORING is still widely unknown. How do YOU feel about spectator sports? Are they tons of fun or brutally boring?
