Language Learning Tips
Do you remember the hours you spent memorising words like ferry, pencil sharpener and horse? How many times did you ever actually use these words? Some words give you a far better return on investment than others. I remember learning French at school when I was younger; we spent hours of valuable class time learning useless vocabulary for kitchen utensils, extended family members, clothing and rooms in a house. This was all good and well except when I went to France and got lost in a street market, I had no idea what to say. Start with the 100 most common words, learn them and make sentences with them over and over again. Learn just enough grammar to be able to do this and do it until you feel pretty comfortable with all of them. Then start expanding your vocabulary based on what is useful for you.

You know those days when you study really hard and all of a sudden, things just don't quite make sense anymore? It's that moment when your brain has officially given up and feels like a lump of goo. This is the moment you're aiming for. Until you reach this moment, you probably aren't maximising your time or effort. When you start learning a language, the goo-brain stage will probably come after an hour or so of poring over a grammar textbook. Later on, it may be a whole morning of grammar and an entire night of hanging out with native speaking friends before you reach this moment. But when it happens, relish it.

Shakira and Iggy Collaboration May be in the Near Future
There are no words to properly express how happy this news made me. As I've made clear in plenty of cards, I absolutely adore Shakira. She's probably my favorite female celebrity of all time. While I'm not the biggest fan of Iggy as a person, there is no denying how addictive her rhymes are. With Shakira's 11th album (and second baby) on the way, the world should be ready for some great collaboration, including the Mana single that should be dropping any day now!

After writing a card inspired by my WASTED Spanish studies, I turned to my favorite profesora, Shakira, for a refresher course. Welcome to 'Sweet Talk' where I'll be highlighting some phrases in other languages that I think we can all connect with! First up, let's see what Shakira has for us: Personally, I love listening to Shakira sing in her native Spanish. The English versions of her songs are equally catchy but something about her Spanish recordings get to me! This is one of her more recent tracks, which you might know from the English version that features Rihanna! The chorus starts at 0:39 and listening to it will help you pronounce the phrase! VOCABULARY: Nunca - Never Me acuerdo - I remember Olvidare(te) - To forget (you) All together: Nunca me acuerdo de olvidarte - I can never remember to forget you. Definitely a sentiment I think we've all experienced before. Now if someone could teach me how to move and look like Shakira, that would be great!

2015 Power Players: The Ladies
2014 was a year of serious girl power (think Taylor Swift's 1989 or Nicki's Anaconda) and it looks like 2015 will be an even stronger one. Six ladies stand out to me for 2015 and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us ~ Ariana Grande - After problem came out, Ariana sealed the deal as the new hit maker in pop music. Whether she's the next Mariah or not, she's got big plans in 2015 including a world tour and HOPEFULLY a new album. She's staying out of trouble, generally being adorable, and killing it in a high pony tail. Azealia Banks - Headling Coachella is just the beginning of Banks' 2015 domination plan. She's planning a new album, heading towards 400k instagram followers, and will probably be collaborating with a ton of people you've never heard of. Her new album Fantasea II: The Second Wave is going to be followed up by Banks' third album (which she's already announced!) called Business and Pleasure. Lorde - That track from the Mockingjay soundtrack was wicked and proof that Lorde has more in her than one Grammy winning album. There are rumors (big rumors) of a 2015 album release, but now its looking more like 2016. Either way, I'm sure she has some amazing covers and live performances for us this year! Nicki Minaj - While she's embarking on the Pinkprint world tour, Nicki isn't planning to slow down. Her newest video with Drake, Chris Brown, and Lil Wayne is the definition of fierce. No matter what she's doing or where she is you know she'll be doing it will the attitude that made her famous. Shakira - Shakira Shakira! She's back in the game with her 11th - yeah, you heard me - ELEVENTH studio album. She'll be working with more amazing artists and hopefully adding a tour to her to do list because I need to see Shakira once before I die. Jessie J - Okay if Bang Bang didn't literally blow your mind, you need to get your hearing checked. I alway like her singles cause they're catchy as hell but she is now taking her vocals to a new level and BELTING it out. If she doesn't get some more attention this year there is going to be trouble! And you know Beyonce is probably going to do something ridiculous again too. Also, where is Lady Gaga other than singing with Tony Bennet?
How To Learn A New Language At Home
I've been trying to improve my French recently, and came across these awesome YouTubers called DamonandJo. They have self-taught themselves nearly 6 languages! I believe they speak French, Spanish, Portugese, Italian, German, and of course English! You can either watch the video above (which I suggest cause they have the BEST sense of humor) or check out their tips below: 1. Follow Famous YouTubers in the language you want to learn! There are tons of youtubers in other languages, and often if they are famous enough, there will be english subtitles. Listen to them to hear real people speaking the language rather than a text book! They're usually super entertaining too so it helps :) 2. Follow those YouTubers or famous people on twitter so you see that language each day! The easiest way to get used to a foreign language is to see it all the time and this really helps! 3. Change your phone/facebook/etc language to your desired language! Since you probably already know where everything is in your phone or facebook, you wont be confused and you'll learn a ton of new vocab! 4. Listen to audio books in the language you want!!! Audible has a ton of foreign language books. Try starting with a book you already know well (like Harry Potter for me - I'm trying to read that in Korean right now...) and listen throughout your day! 5. Sign up for foreign magazines or newsletters! Or even better download their app in another language! For example, my boyfriend gets push notification from Le Monde which is a french newspaper :) Even if you only read the headline, its practice. 6. Try cooking a meal using a recipe in a different language! You start to learn that a lot of words you actually already know (for example, sauté means the same thing in french and in korean bokkeum (like bokkeumbap) means fried! so literally "fried rice!" 7. Watch TV shows in the language Duh!!!! 8. Talk to yourself and dont be afraid! Practice speaking whenever you can, even to people who are strangers! be brave! What languages are you trying to learn?!
