These days, I wonder if tvN produces more dramas than the Big 3. Being on cable gives them the freedom to explore more varied story lines and given the number of B-list and C-list actors desperate for the opportunity to get more visibility in lead roles, there’s no want for talent. And because they do their own thing, they don’t necessary have to follow the pack which means that they can produce fantasy dramas even when the trend ends. So what is Surplus Princess (a.k.a. The Mermaid) about? From Koreandrama.org: Surplus Princess is a story about a mermaid who attempts to become a human being so that she can stay forever with the man she loves. Ha Ni (Jo Bo Ah) is a mermaid princess in the underwater empire but she loves for the human world when she sees and falls in love with a man. She transforms into a human and follows Hyun Myung (Ohn Joo Wan) to live in a temporary house for people who are preparing for employment. The pragmatic Hyun Myung is trying to find a good-paying job to provide him with a comfortable life. But will he be distracted by Ha Ni, who has just 100 days to make Hyun Myung fall in love with her so that she can permanently remain as a human being? Has Christmas come early for Splash and My Little Mermaid fans? It appears that they are trying to inject some realism by exploring the struggles of the unemployed. But on the other hand, there’s this thing about a mermaid needing to make a man fall for her in 100 days. In other words, this drama has the possibility of being delightful but the potential of being a huge fail. I side-eyed My Love For The Stars when I first read the synopsis but look at how that turned out. But then again, it also had Jun Ji Hyun and Kim Soo Hyun in lead roles.
