On 18 September 2014 millions of Scots will vote on whether they want their country to become independent or remain part of the United Kingdom. Through a campaigning process that has lasted well over a year, Scottish parties (the SNP and the Scottish Greens) campaigned under the slogan "Yes Scotland" while the UK parties (the Conservatives, Labour and the Lib Dems) showed a rare display of unity campaigning under the slogan of "Better Tother". The Scottish campaign is headed by First Minister Alex Salmond while the UK campaign is led by Alistair Darling. The first televised debate took place at the end of last week and the general media consensus was that Alistair Darling scored a convincing win. With only a month left until the vote, it's time to read up on the Scottish referendum; what it means for Scotland, what it means for the UK and how it may affect the rest of the world.
