When a child finds a series she enjoys, something magical happens. It also makes your life easier as a parent, since you need to do nothing but supply the books and cross your fingers that the author keeps writing! There are several picture books that feature recurring characters, such as Olivia, Babar, Mo Willems' Pigeon, Madeline, Lyle the Crocodile, etc. If your child enjoys them, pick up a stack at the library and dive in! For emerging readers, there are classics like Frog and Toad, Commander Toad (not related to Toad!) or Henry and Mudge. My favorite more recent series is Elephant and Piggie by Mo Willems. They always make kids laugh! More fluent early readers have a treasure trove of choices! Junie B. Jones, Magic Tree House, Horrible Harry, Flat Stanley are just a few great series kids will dig into. Cam Jansen, Geronimo Stilton, The Zack Files and The Time Warp Trio are still others that are great for 1st to 3rd graders. The key is all in the reading, so don't quibble at Babysitter's Club, Captain Underpants, Rainbow Fairies, or Disney tie-ins. Explore online or in the library, ask for suggestions from a knowledgeable bookstore clerk or your children's librarian. There are plenty of great series books on a variety of topics, so your horse lover or sports fanatic can dig in! Support your child's interest in a series and track them all down. The comfort of recurring characters can help make your child a more confident and engaged reader, so keep track of the latest titles or fill in the blanks if you've missed one! It's also fun to see a collection grow on a bookshelf at home, so this is one place to spend. If it's an older series, check garage sales, too--you might just hit a Magic Tree House jackpot!
