2 packages of firm tofu
1/2 cup BBQ sauce
additional BBQ sauce for dipping
Preheat grill or oven to 375F.
Slice tofu into 1/2 inch thick sticks, so that they resemble thick cut french fries.
Using a few paper towels, pat fries to eliminate water. Brush fries with a thin layer of BBQ sauce. Lay tofu on grill (baking sheet lined with parchment paper if baking).
Cook for about 20-25 minutes until fries are golden and crisp. You may want to flip them halfway into cooking to ensure that they brown and crisp evenly on all sides.
Brush with BBQ sauce again right before serving and also serve with a side of BBQ sauce for dipping.
Vegan BBQ Sauce
Makes: about 2 cups
1 1/2 cups tomato sauce
3 tablespoons agave nectar or maple syrup
1 tablespoon molasses
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari, or to taste
1 teaspoon sweet or smoked paprika
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano or basil
Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well. If time allows, cover and let stand for an hour or so to allow the flavors to combine more fully.
