Shipping Industry Aiming to Become more Sustainable – The Road to Success

Sri Lanka’s shipping industry heavily contributes to its economy, and there are numerous ports and dockyards around the island. The Ceylon Shipping industry aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals in Sri Lanka is aiming to launch a series of activities to make the industry more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Decarbonising Shipping
A systematic transformation that can only be done with a collective effort with maritime, energy, finance, and the infrastructure, the decarbonisation of shipping can be one of the many steps to make the shipping industry more sustainable. This provides opportunities for zero-emission fuels while reducing the sulphur levels of the seawater, a common goal of the International Maritime Organisation.

Zero Coalition
Zero-emission vessels operating in Sri Lankan seas soon enough can seem a little far-fetched, however, with the help of the IMO, financial institutions, port operators and shipbuilders are finally coming together to initiate this sustainable goal toward a clear shipping operation.

The Way Forward
This massive transformation of becoming more sustainable does not come easy for Sri Lanka shipping, however, with the global giants offering to help with the initiative and IMO’s climate-related ambitions aligning with the shipping industry’s long-term goals, finally, some hope is on the horizon.
