As someone who flies long haul frequently, a recent article on BBC news caught my eye. According to the report, a United Airlines flight from Newark to Denver was diverted when a passenger prevented the woman in front of him from leaning back using a £13 lock called a Knee Defender. After he allegedly refused requests from cabin crew to remove it, his un-laid back fellow traveller allegedly hurled a glass of water at him. Both passengers were dropped off and not allowed to continue their journey - and rightly so! I was on the woman's side until I saw that she'd hurled a glass of water at him and then I figured that for that kind of childish behaviour, they both deserved to be kicked off the flight! I'll admit, I am definitely someone who reclines. I eat a good meal before boarding, get on the flight, stow my bag, put in my earplugs and go to sleep. If I'm lucky, I'll wake up at the destination. However, I am on occasion woken up by crew and asked to put my chair back into the upright position during meal times - and I am more than happy to oblige. In all honesty, I don't see the big problem. If someone in front of you reclines, you too can recline. Equally, if it bothers you SO much, then pay for an upgrade or wake up at some ridiculous hour to ensure you book a seat with legroom.
@spudsomma I totally agree with checking first. I was flying from Tokyo to London and the guy in front of a girl in my row suddenly reclined his seat back and it knocked her coke, which spilled all over her. Of course, he apologised AFTER but it all could have been avoided if he'd just checked first...
@funkystar25, I just splurged for an economy upgrade to get that extra few inches of space. I recline fully, except during meals. I'm too claustrophobic otherwise!
@spudsomma looking behind you is just a basic courtesy. It really bugs me how people seem to throw manners out the window as soon as they board a flight.
Flying long haul is already stressful enough, I don't see why people need to make life more difficult by squabbling like children over things like this. The guy putting the clip thing on his chair was really rude and inconsiderate but the lady throwing water at him? Well that was just really childish.
Same here, @ahnjp05. I've got to at least snooze a little on the flight. I just don't like the people who crash their seat back without glancing over to see if your tray table is down.
