Back in the 1970s, when my mother was just about my age, she used to collect matchbooks from every hotel, restaurant, and club she visited. Matchbooks used to be an insanely popular method of small business marketing in the mid-20th century, especially in Manhattan where she was living at the time. (Obviously, cigarettes have fallen in popularity since then, hence why it's a little harder to find them these days.) Ever since stumbling upon Mom's collection all 40+ years later, I've been intrigued by the creativity companies would put into their matchbooks.
