French street artist Mr. Brainwash's New 9/11 Memorial Mural in NYC
You may have been introduced to Thierry Guetta - a Parisian street artist called 'Mr. Brainwash' - in the street art documentary "Exit Through The Gift Shop". The now Los Angeles-based artist has seen plenty of success since, having since popped up anywhere from a solo exhibit at New York Fashion Week to album covers for Madonna and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This week, Mr. Brainwash revealed his latest project, a 60 by 200-ft. 9/11 memorial mural located just across the street from site of the World Trade Center. In an interview with the Gothamist, Guetta explained, "I wanted to just give my love to everyone in New York City, for the people here, for the people who had the strength to survive and to go through that." Some fellow artists, however, don't consider the art very tasteful at all, and he has since come under harsh criticism from both New Yorkers and his peers in the street art world. A lot of artists feel like his motifs aren't very original or tasteful and that Mr. Brainwash's art itself lacks authenticity. "Sadly, artist Mr. Brainwash is still a thing that exists." Bucky Turco, an art writer for New York based culture blog, Animal New York, stated, citing it as "crap artwork that memorializes one of the most horrific disasters to ever happen in the United States." What do you guys think of the 9/11 mural? Do you think it's tasteful or tacky? Personally, I think 9/11 will always be a very sensitive subject for New Yorkers, and even if they commissioned another artist, you're not going to ever be able to completely win everyone over.
