Neil Gaiman is by far one of my favorite writers. His books are awesome, his movies are awesome, and for those who didn’t know he also wrote an episode of Doctor Who (season 6 episode 4 “The Doctor’s Wife”) that was, as I’m sure you can guess, awesome. Probably my favorite book from Gaiman is Anansi Boys, a fascinating modern retelling of the Anansi myth. Anansi Boys begins with “Fat” Charlie Nancy having his incredibly boring life disrupted when he learns… 1) His father just died at a karaoke bar while on stage. 2) Said late father was in fact a GOD and Charlie has a brother he can contact by sending a message via Spider. Oh and his brother has Charlie’s late father’s magical powers. Naturally Charlie’s skeptical but once he and his brother connect they spiral down into a—excuse the pun—web of misadventure and hilarity. I really love this book because as funny as the craziness of Charlie’s brother, the real story is how Charlie learns to cope both with his new found brother, the loss of his father, and also his own life. There’s a really great quote from the book that I like a lot: “Each person who ever was or is or will be has a song. It isn't a song that anybody else wrote. It has its own melody, it has its own words. Very few people get to sing their song. Most of us fear that we cannot do it justice with our voices, or that our words are too foolish or too honest, or too odd. So people live their song instead.” The point of all of that though was to share with you guys the exciting news that Gaiman has finally confirmed that Anansi Boys is being made into a multiple part miniseries that will air on the BBC. Sadly no other information yet like an air date, but at least we know what to look forward to.
@pixiedust you definitely should, it's so good. you like fractured fairy tales and stuff right? this should be perfect for you c:
I'm a big Gaiman fan myself but I haven't actually read Anansi Boys, now I've got to!
This is awesome!!! I heard rumors of this before (and maybe posted about it...? I can't even remember...) but I'm really excited to see what will come of this.
@AgentCory I am indeed a fan of fairy tales, both fractured and original so I will add this to my list. Thank you for the suggestion!
@AgentCory Let me know if you hear any rumors ;)
