Filipino artist Eisen Bernardo combines magazine covers with classic art

Eisen Bernardo unites classical and modern in his latest project "Mag + Art", combining contemporary magazine covers with classic portraits by artists like Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, and John Singer Sargent. (It's sort of strange how well some of these blend in with one another!) I'm not quite sure of the statement the artist is trying to make. Are we likening Hollywood celebrities to the muses of some of the most esteemed fine artists? Or was this just to point out coincidences? Either way, these images are extremely amusing to look at! --------------------------------------------------------------- Photo 1: Natalie Portman, W Magazine May 2005 + "Portrait of Frances Sherborne Ridley Watts" by John Singer Sargent Photo 2: Prince, Billboard Magazine January 2013 + "Portrait of Theodore Roosevelt by John Singer Sargent" Photo 3: Kirsten Dunst, Esquire Russia February 2012 + "Good Companions" by Vittorio Reggianini Photo 4: Robert Pattinson, Vanity Fair Italy March 2010 + "The Skater (portrait of William Grant)" by Gilbert Stuart Photo 5: Gwen Stefani, InStyle Magazine April 2010 + "The Letter" by Auguste Toulmouche Photo 6: Katherine Heigl, Harper's Bazaar Ukraine August 2010 + "Rita Granadina" by George Owen Wynne Apperley Photo 7: Prince William, Vanity Fair Spain April 2011 + "Portrait of Monsieur M," William-Adolphe Bouguereau Photo 8: Gwen Stefani, InStyle Magazine November 2011 + "Dolce Far Niente" by John William Godward Photo 9: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Esquire Malaysia + "Frieda y Diego Rivera" by Frida Kahlo Photo 10: Charlize Theron, W Magazine February 2012 + "Poker Night (from A Streetcar Named Desire)" by Thomas Hart Benton

I like how the artist tried to fit the clothes to each pictures
Are we likening them to muses, or are we comparing the differences in who we "worship" and seek to recreate through art over time? Then, through paintings. Now, through magazine covers. Either way, it is interesting, to be sure.
What a great idea, these are fabulous!
this is really cool, I love how the magazine covers and pieces are matched up perfectly it's a really cool take on classic art
@missophiestik That's one of my favorite parts too! It seems like he put a lot of consideration into what goes best with what.

Emily Blunt Has A Girl-Crush
So it seems Emily Blunt has a little girl-crush... But on who? Charlize Theron, naturally. It's no surprise Blunt has a strong admiration for the gorgeousness that is Theron. The two have just completed working together on the sequel to 2012's hit movie, Snow White and the Huntsman. From interviews, the two seem very fond of each other. "It was so much fun," Blunt told the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's grants banquet at the Beverly Wilshire hotel. "I loved working with all those people and Charlize is my new girl crush, for sure." Even Blunt's husband, John Krasinski, chimed in, "She's my new girl crush, too. She said I'm allowed to say that." Absolutely adorable. The couple has been married since 2010 and have a daughter named Hazel. They also share an environmentally friendly $2 million dollar mansion in Ojai, California just outside of Los Angeles. But Blunt jokingly corrected her husband, "You don't have a pass yet, we'll discuss that later." Theron just turned 40 and looks like she hasn't aged a day. Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, Who's the fairest of them all? Charlize Theron, of course. She made sure to celebrate the big 4-0 with many of her famous friends which included Blunt and Krasinski, and Chelsea Handler. Though Jennifer Anniston and Justin Theroux were invited, the two were off on their honeymoon in Bora Bora with best friend Courtney Cox. The celebration took place in West Hollywood as the stars arrived looking very casual but with gifts in hand. You'd think celebrities don't give gifts since they're fully capable of buying anything they want themselves. Here's a picture of Blunt and Theron on set together. Blunt plays Theron's "evil younger sister" in the film that is supposed to be release with Universal Pictures on April 22, 2016. Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain, and Sam Claflin are some of the other fellow costars. The two women joked, "It was a total queen-off. There were two crowns on set and you don't want that." It looks like they're enjoying the spotlight as the leading ladies. The movie actually got rid of Snow White entirely which means Kristen Stewart did not reprise her role. Kinda odd for a movie that has the character in its title. Stewart has recently gotten a lot of press revolving around her sexuality but she's out and proud and recently revealed in an interview that she's "not hiding". She suggests fans to Google her if they are so concerned to know her sexual orientation. Regardless, we hope her relationship with her ex-costars still remains strong. Are you excited for the movie!?
Watch Gwen's Relationships Evolve For 10 Years
Gwen Stefani's relationships have always been rocky. For better or for worse, they provided Stefani with the material to write some of her best songs. First dating a fellow band mate, Tony, and then marrying Gavin Rossdale. Through Stefani's work, we can watch the whole thing unfold: Sunday Morning This song was about Tony Kanal, Stefani's boyfriend and No Doubt's bassist. They had an incredibly rocky relationship which probably wasn't helped by the amount of songs she wrote talking about how much it sucked. This song was inspired by one of their last fights. "Sappy pathetic little me That was the girl I used to be I know who I am, but who are you? You're not looking like you used to " Bathwater Five years into her relationship with Gavin Rossdale, Stefani was having trouble dealing with his dating style, his long list of lovers, and his flirty personality. He may or may not have cheated on her at this point, but she "can't help" staying with him. "But I still love to wash in your old bathwater Love to think that you couldn't love another I can't help it...you're my kind of man" Running One year before Stefani and Rossdale got married, No Doubt released one of their best albums, Rock Steady. On it, Stefani wrote one of her happiest songs about her soon-to-be husband. This was a hopeful time for the couple. "Me I'm the one you chose Out of all the people You wanted me the most I'm so sorry that I've fallen Help me up lets keep on running Don't let me fall out of love" Detective Aaaaaand then it all turns to shit. Stefani found out that Rossdale is a nasty cheater and wrote one of my favorite songs calling him out. "I feel you must have failed me once again you've let me down Peek in, sneak about I'm gonna snoop and call you out I've caught you, you're hands are red Now I'm your broken hearted detective" Cool But in the mean time, her relationship with Tony improved and she was able to write a song for her solo album about how they are on great terms - they want each other to be happy, they can be friends again, and they're finally at peace. "It's hard to remember how it felt before Now I found the love of my life... Passes things get more comfortable Everything is going right And after all the obstacles It's good to see you now with someone else And it's such a miracle that you and me are still good friends After all that we've been through I know we're cool" Used To Love You After 3 children, getting back together, breaking up, getting back together again, etc, Stefani and Rossdale finally called it quits, divorcing in 2015. Gwen comes to terms with it with one of her latest releases, Used to Love You. "Never thought this would happen Gonna let it sink in, you're gone I don't know, know what I'm feeling I must be dreaming, you're gone Suitcase, band-aids Pulling back out the driveway You go, I'll stay You can keep all the memories I thought I was the best thing that ever happened to you I thought you loved me the most" Make Me Like You Now, Stefani is dating (is engaged to????) Blake Shelton and is over-the-moon happy. Her newest track is all about falling in love unexpectedly. She's happy, poppy, and ready to conquer the world all over again. "Why'd you have to go and make me like you? Yeah this is a feeling I'm not used to Why'd you have to go and make me like you? I'm so mad at you cause now you got me missing you Cause now you got me missing you" Best of luck on your new romance, and thank you for all the music you've created!
How To Make Halayang Ube, A Sweet Purple Yam Dessert from the Philippines
I lived in the same house for most of my childhood in North Jersey, as did a majority of the neighbors on my block. We played together, walked to school together, attended each other's baptisms and birthdays and Independence Day barbecues, and pretty much grew together like family. My Cuban neighbors taught me how to dance merengue. On Sundays, my Syrian neighbors often took us with them to their Assyrian Orthodox church. And my Korean neighbors introduced us to Lunar New Year, decorating their front step every February. My Filipino neighbors, however, were the ones who always had the best parties. The adults would be dancing in the back yard and singing hours of karaoke, while the kids all crowded around the living room couch while we took turns playing Sonic The Hedgehog. When it was time to eat, there would be giant trays of lumpia, pancit canton, and on the most special occasions, lechon - a whole roasted pig. All of the food would be seriously amazing, but my favorite was the halayang ube, a sweet and sticky cake made with sweetened condensed milk and the pulp of ube, a type of purple yam. Fast-forward to July 4th,1999, my last day living in New Jersey. We had a huge neighborhood party complete with fireworks and food and all of the kids on the block playing games together. When it was time for everyone to say goodbye, one of the things that Maggie, the mother of the Filipino family, did was give my mother a small package of purple yam ube powder and the halayang ube recipe because she knew it was my favorite. To this day, I really, really miss Maggie, her family, and the years we spent together, so when I am able to make halayang ube, I can't help but feel incredibly sentimental. To make this recipe, which calls for actual ube yams, you may have to go to a Filipino market or a grocery store that offers a large amount of Asian products. Contrary to what many believe, taro root and ube are not actually the same, so make sure that if you're buying frozen or powdered product to substitute, you're still buying the right one. Also, the picture has the halayang ube piled into small jars, but most people simply spread the halayang on a baking dish or plate. It may look a little messy, but it tastes great! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Halayang Ube (or Ube Halaya) 1 1/2 cups grated cooked purple yam 1 cup evaporated milk or (traditionally) coconut milk 1 14oz can condensed milk a pinch of salt 1 tablespoon butter/margarine plus extra for smoothing the cooked yam 1. Wash the purple yam thoroughly, and peel and slice it into big chunks. Boil until tender. 2. In a deep pot or saucepan, combine all the ingredients except the butter or margarine. Stir to combine well and on medium high heat, cook until the mixture thickens. You have to keep stirring while cooking to avoid lumps. It will get harder to stir as it cooks. 3. Halfway through the cooking, add a tablespoon of butter. Mix well and continue cooking until it starts to pull away from the sides of the pan/pot and when you get some, it doesn’t fall off the spoon. 4. Transfer the sweetened purple yam into well-buttered dish/dishes. Add a pat of butter on top of the mixture and using the back of a spoon, level and smooth the purple yam.
Natalie Portman's Dir. Debut: A Tale of Love and Darkness
Natalie Portman's directorial debut looks extremely promising. Not only did she direct the film, she also wrote and starred in it. She adapted the autobiographical novel (with the same title) by Amos Oz into a screenplay and after checking out the trailer, it looks like it'll be a very powerful film. Honestly, this trailer was released a couple of months ago and I've been extremely interested in it since then but the trailer with English subtitles recently got released and I could finally get a grasp of what's going on in the film. But even without the subtitles it's pretty easy to tell that the movie is very intense. Being that it takes place in a war-torn Jerusalem, it's understandable that some of the content of the film might be hard to watch. But the trailer is effective in many ways because it still doesn't give too much away. I would assume if you read the book, you'll know what's going on within each scene but since I haven't I can't say too much about that. The (beautifully) written official synopsis is: A family saga and a magical self-portrait of a writer who witnessed the birth of a nation and lived through its turbulent history. A Tale of Love and Darkness is the story of a boy who grows up in war-torn Jerusalem, in a small apartment crowded with books in twelve languages and relatives speaking nearly as many. The story of an adolescent whose life has been changed forever by his mother’s suicide. The story of a man who leaves the constraints of his family and community to join a kibbutz, change his name, marry, have children. The story of a writer who becomes an active participant in the political life of his nation. One thing I can speak on, though, is how beautifully shot the film is. One example is the shot above of Portman's character walking across the frame at the end of the trailer. We get a lot shown to us in a simple scene and it has the potential to tell us a lot about the character. We get a clash of colors with the gray of the sky and the full-green of the field she's walking through. Portman's costume design matches the dreary and dour sky instead of the ground she's walking on and this could tell us a little about her character. Just through color we can assume that Portman's slow walk through the field isn't one where she is thinking about how beautiful her life is. She becomes aligned with that same dreariness, that same amount of dread that engulfs the sky. If Portman littered the film with beautiful, poignant moments like the one above, I'm sure I'll fall in love with the movie. A Tale of Love and Darkness doesn't have an American release date yet but here's to hoping it hits our shores sooner instead of later.
