Shepard Fairey paints a large Nelson Mandela mural in Johannesburg, South Africa
American street artist Shepard Fairey announced this week that he has officially finished a giant Nelson Mandela mural project with some members of his OBEY team in Johannesburg, South Africa. The decision to memorialize Mandela should come to no surprise to Fairey's fans, as he is known for being inspired by international human rights activists and has created similar murals for them, including a large portrait of Burma opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Fairey discussed the project on his official blog: "I'm an advocate of human rights, justice, and equality, so it should be obvious why Nelson Mandela is a hero of mine. Some people seem confused by the use of purple and the slogan on my Mandela mural but they reference the anti Apartheid Purple Protest."

I love Shepard Fairy! I know a lot of people think he's a sell out, but I still love his work.

The colors used to make the edges of his hair where it reaches his face. Great work.

@galinda I'm sort of mixed about how I feel about Shepard Fairey myself (particularly in regards to the Obama Change image), but to be honest, you have to give credit where credit's due, and he's a really important person in the art world!
