Climbing down the 30-meter Sri Gethuk waterfall, in Yogyakarta
Rappelling, or as locals like to say “repling”, is the descent of a steep cliff or slope using a rope. In Indonesia, one famous spot to do this is at the Sri Gethuk waterfall. Located in the area of Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, this area is famous among local tourists. Upon arriving at Lempuyang train station, you begin your journey to Sri Gethuk waterfall by car. There is no public transportation heading to the area, hence it is recommended to use your own private transportation. The journey itself will take approximately 1.5 hours by private car or motorcycle. Upon arriving you will be greeted by the Garuda Moksa team. They organize rappelling activities in the area For rappelling you need to make a reservation one week in advance of your visit as it is not a very popular activity. The price for one group consisting of 10 people is Rp 1,000,000 (US$82). The Garuda Moksa team is a group of people who share an interest in extreme adventure activities. Seeing the potential of the area, they decided to promote it through extreme-sports activities. In 2008, they established Garuda Moksa. Since then, they have been the sole facilitator for tourists interested in extreme activities. The waterfall is 30 meters high. On rainy days there is no rappelling activity due to the dangerous conditions. Climbing down a waterfall is definitely not for the faint hearted, but if you’re an adrenaline junkie this activity is definitely your thing. Before rappelling safety equipment must be worn. The Garuda Moksa team will arrange everything and help you put on all the equipment. Climbing ropes, climbing harnesses, descender devices, boots, gloves and helmets are all provided. It is recommended to wear waterproof clothes, as you will get wet from the waterfall spray while descending. After getting ready, the team gives a short instruction lecture on how to climb down safely. When descending you must keep both your legs straight. Because if not, you will lose your balance and start moving to other directions rather than straight down. Maintain your focus and gradually climb down. The instructor will always shout from above to guide you. They will give instructions on how to move and which position your feet should be in. Their instructions are purely to make sure you land in the middle of the lake. A second instructor at the bottom of the waterfall will help pull you to the side. If this is too adventurous, you can rent a boat to enjoy the view of Sri Gethuk Lake. Many local tourists come to this area to spend the day by boating, swimming, or just enjoying the view. Tourists must wear life vests as the currents can be dangerous especially on rainy days. The area has proper bathrooms, changing rooms, small shops and even a musholla.
