How To Build An Authentic Falafel Sandwich (Vegan)

Visiting the Getty Museum is probably my most favorite reasons to drive out to Los Angeles with my friends. It's like Disneyland for art nerds, where every large building houses an immeasurable amount of visual history and work by many of the famed masters. However, all Rembrandts aside, the Getty Museum is also really close to a Zankou Chicken, a Lebanese 'fast food' restaurant that serves up bang-for-your-buck hot shwarma and falafel sandwiches. It's become a tradition of mine to stop off at Zankou after a full day of art-viewing to get tasty sandwich with my friends. So good! One of the things that makes Zankou my favorite is how they build their sandwiches - much more traditionally than most other places that serve falafel. (And while things like the 'falafel burger' might be fun every once in a while, sometimes you just want to eat something that tastes like your Mom made it, you know?) So, inspired by Zankou Chicken's falafel sandwichy goodness, I've decided I wanted to give you all a recipe showing how to make some delicious (and not dry!) traditional falafel sandwiches. Try it the next time you want to get a little more 'international' with your lunch! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Falafel Sandwiches (serves 4) 4 cups chickpeas, dried 2 large onions 1 whole head of garlic 2 bunches parsley Hot banana peppers to suit your taste Pickled turnips to suit your taste 1/2 a medium-sized cucumber, sliced 1/2 a tomato, sliced 2 tsp. cumin powder Salt and pepper to taste 1 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. baking soda 2 - 3 loaves of pita bread 1 cup tahini paste 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/2 - 3/4 cup water, as needed 1/2 - 3/4 tsp. salt To Make Tahini Sauce: 1. Combine tahini, lemon juice, and two cloves of minced garlic in a bowl and stir to combine. 2. Add the water a little at a time as needed to form a smooth, creamy sauce approximately the thickness of heavy cream. 3. Season to taste with salt and more lemon juice, if necessary. To Make Falafel: 1. Soak the chickpeas overnight. Drain. 2. Combine beans, onions, garlic, parsley, and hot pepper in a food processor. Add salt, pepper, cumin, and baking powder. Mix thoroughly. 3. When ready to fry the Falafel, add baking soda. Shape into patties in 1 1/2" in diameter and 1/2" thick. (Small 'meatball' sizes are okay too!) Fry in deep hot oil until light brown and crisp. 4. Serve hot with tomato slices, cucumber slices, banana peppers, onion slices, and/or pickled turnip in pita bread in the form of a sandwich. Add the tahini sauce. ------------------------------------------------------------------ If you don't have four people to share this with, no worries! The falafel batter can be easily frozen and stored for the next time you want to make yourself a falafel sandwich. Just remember to thaw and add the baking soda just before frying.

I'll pass on the banana peppers, but the rest of this sandwich sounds incredible.
@asparagus In New York you can get falafel sandwiches on nearly every street corner but I totally haven't mastered the art of eating it gracefully hahaha maybe I'll start making them at home for practice haha
I love tahini and falafel! There is nothing better than struggling to eat a falafel sandwich without half of the ingredients falling out of the pita :)
My mouth is watering! I have to try this with my vegetarian mom
@GetFitwithAmy Yeah, they're definitely not for everyone, but you should at least try pickled turnips if you haven't. They taste better than they sound!

Do you know these foods are great enemies for thyroid problems?
Nowadays, many people take thyroid pills. They need to take it forever, much like diabetic medications. Many of us are talking about foods that lower diabetes risk and related dos and don’t. Similarly, we should be aware of the foods to eat and foods to avoid for thyroid problems. Let us discuss it in this article. What is the role of the thyroid gland in our body? The thyroid gland creates hormones that control the body’s metabolic rate, which affects bone growth and maintenance, heart, muscle, and digestive function. It balances our energy and regulates our mood and body heat. A sufficient intake of iodine from the diet is necessary for its proper operation. Two common types of thyroids – Hyperthyroidism & Hypothyroidism When the thyroid produces too much hormone or too little hormone, it is called thyroid disease. The disease known as hyperthyroidism causes the body to burn energy more quickly than it should. Hypothyroidism is just the opposite to it. The body is consuming energy more slowly than it should because the thyroid is not making enough hormones. With many health conditions, some factors are out of our control, including our family history and the environment around us. But diet also plays a big role — and since you’re the one in command of your plate, you can determine which foods to choose and which thyroid foods to avoid. Some of the foods to avoid for thyroid problems  1. Cruciferous Vegetables These vegetables belong to the Brassic plant group. This vegetable has distinctive petals like cabbage. It is one of the important foods to avoid for thyroid issues. Some cruciferous vegetables are: 1. Cabbage. 2. Broccoli. 3. Cauliflower. 4. Bok choy. 5. Brussels sprouts. 6. Kale. 7. Mustard plant. 8. Turnips. 9. Garden cress etc. You might wonder why cruciferous veggies should be avoided for thyroid health. More fiber and other nutrients are present in these plants. However, they might block the generation of thyroid hormones. If you are iodine deficient, you will experience additional effects. Iodine is necessary for a healthy thyroid operation. Therefore, it is best to consume fewer cruciferous vegetables. According to studies, eating these vegetables may prevent the thyroid from using iodine. Cruciferous vegetables that have been cooked can lessen the effect. So you can consume cruciferous veggies in moderation while avoiding salads made of them. 2. Fatty foods Butter, meat, and all things fried are fatty foods. According to Stephanie Lee, MD, Ph.D., associate chief of endocrinology, nutrition, and diabetes at Boston Medical Center and associate professor at Boston University School of Medicine in Massachusetts, fats have been found to interfere with the body’s ability to absorb thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Additionally, fats may prevent the thyroid from producing hormones. Some medical professionals advise avoiding any fried foods and limiting your consumption of fats from sources like butter, mayonnaise, margarine, and fatty meat cuts. 3. Soy Foods Even soy and meals containing soy are very good in protein and can prevent cancer and heart disease, but they also have some effects on thyroid issues. But according to current research, soy has no impact on thyroid hormones.  It is generally advised to take thyroid medicine on an empty stomach to prevent inconsistent absorption. Soy is the greatest food source of isoflavones which are linked with thyroid disorders. If you consume soy-containing meals, make sure to wait four hours between eating them and taking your dose. This is true because soy can interfere with proper thyroid medication absorption and cause uneven medication effects. A world of tea drinkers
A world of tea drinkers The humble little tea leaf has made quite an impact worldwide. In fact, it’s become the second most drunk beverage in the world after, not surprisingly, water. So, forget those fizzy, sugary soft drinks, those beers and wines that’ll leave you with a sore head and that other hot, black liquid (which can make you feel all jittery), it’s a tea that’s the planet’s real hero. Tea unites the world, it’s drunk to bring people together, to calm us down, to pep us up, to soothe a crisis and to celebrate a reunion. It’s drunk out of mugs, cups, glasses and saucers; it’s drunk hot or iced, with spices, with sugar, with honey, with fruit, with milk (of all sorts: yak, we hear, is special), without milk, with, well, whatever really takes your fancy. Learning to make tea is like a rite of passage and, of course, only you can make yourself the perfect cup. There are ceremonies the world over to celebrate the making of our favourite drink. Over the following pages, we explore some of the customs and traditions of tea drinking worldwide and highlight how this amazing drink has such a deep but diverse cultural following. 1 NEW YORK is believed to be the birthplace of the teabag in 1908 – a tea merchant inadvertently invented it when he wrapped up his tea samples in silk bags to help keep them safe in transit. 2 Yerba mate, an indigenous plant from the Amazon jungle, is the massive favourite hot brew in ARGENTINA and URUGUAY. 3 By the mid-18th century, tea had leapfrogged gin to claim the title of BRITAIN’s favourite drink. 4 IRELAND may be famed for its beloved Guinness, but its people drink more cups of tea per day than any other nation! 5 Mint tea is a staple of MOROCCAN hospitality – if you’re ever offered a cup from a local, be sure to accept it as refusing is seen as extreme rudeness. Take 5 minutes to sit down, relax and enjoy! 6 In SOUTH AFRICA rooibos (or ‘redbush tea’), from the mountainous Cederberg region, is a favourite drink, usually drunk without milk but with lemon or honey. 7 SIBERIA used solid blocks of tea as a currency until the 19th century. 8 Tea in RUSSIA is traditionally made in a samovar – a type of urn used to boil water that has a teapot filled with tea concentrate on the top. 9 When in IRAN do as the locals do and pop a sugar cube in your mouth before taking a sip of hot tea – definitely one for anyone with a sweet tooth to try! 10 The beautifully pink brew of noon chai is extremely popular in the region of KASHMIR. 11 The tea industry in INDIA employs over 1 million people. 12 In MYANMAR, they have an entirely different way to enjoy tea – they pickle it to create lappet! 13 Butter tea is the drink of choice in TIBET – tea churned with yak’s butter and salt may not be to everyone’s taste, but it gives just the right amount of energy to cope with life in the Himalayas. 14 HONG KONG offers the amazingly nicknamed ‘pantyhose milk tea’ – a mixture of black tea and condensed milk that has been passed through a sackcloth bag, which just so happens to look an awful lot like ladies’ hosiery! Yum! 15 TAIWAN gave us bubble tea and we are forever grateful! 16 In AUSTRALIA they ‘billy up the fire’ to make billy tea, made famous by the swagman in the lyrics to Waltzing Matilda. Who knew? The world over, tea has its name synonymous with the country you’re in. It seems that in those countries where tea arrived by ship the words for tea begin with the letter ‘t’ – for instance tee (German), thé (French) and té (Spanish) – while those countries where it arrived overland use words beginning with ‘tch’ or ‘ch’ – çay (Turkish), chay (Russian), chai (Arabic and in India) and po cha (Tibetan) – from the Mandarin ‘cha’. https://www.vingle.net/posts/4873018
Visitor management software in Dubai
If you are thinking about installing visitor management software in the UAE, you should understand its significance and the benefits it can provide. When visitors come to your workplace or facility, visitor management is responsible for greeting them and gathering the necessary information. The information gathered usually consists of gathering the visitor's name, the host's name, the time of arrival and departure, the visitor's identification details, the purpose of the visit, and so on. The following are some of the most important reasons why you should implement a visitor management system (VMS) in your organisation. It improves data security. No one is permitted to enter the office premises unless authorised by the visitor management software in Dubai. Furthermore, the VMS can be configured to track every visitor on campus until they leave. This improves the security of critical data as well as assets on the organization's premises. The Visitor management software package is adaptable in that it allows for multilingual responses. During the registration process, the user can decide and select a language. Furthermore, the app can scan government-issued identity documents such as an individual's Emirates ID, passport, or driver's licence. The visitor management software is set up to print ID badges for any visitor on your premises, which greatly improves security within your organization's walls. The VMS is a plug-and-play system that can be set up quickly and make the entire system operational in minutes.

BUDDHA’S DELIGHT (CHINESE-STYLE VEGETABLE STEW)
Buddha’s Delight is a healthy Chinese dish that can be complicated to make, but our recipe breaks it down and makes it easier to make at home, even for a weeknight dinner! Chinese cuisine puts a lot of emphasis on vegetables and bean products (like tofu and soybean). Meat takes a back seat to these other ingredients in authentic Chinese dishes, which often contain a long list of ingredients. Buddha’s Delight That’s why we were intrigued when we first encountered Buddha’s Delight at a new takeout restaurant. A healthy, vegetarian option? That might just be authentic! And, it is. Well, kind of. Buddha’s Delight is a vegetarian dish that is widely popular in China among Buddhist communities, who are vegetarian and use only simple seasonings. It is also a very popular dish when it comes to ringing in the Lunar New Year! Americanized versions of Buddha’s Delight typically just contain a variety of vegetables and often tofu, but authentic Buddha’s Delight can have a VERY long list of ingredients, some of them familiar, others, not so much. The Ingredients for Buddha’s Delight The list of ingredients for traditional Buddha’s Delight is quite long, but it’s a fun dish whose ingredients can vary depending on your personal preferences. Really there is no one recipe for Buddha’s Delight. The ingredients and seasonings vary from cook to cook, depending on preference and what is available. The ingredients can be broken down into three categories: Flavour, Texture, Colour. Flavour Flavour ingredients are essential to the dish. You don’t need all of them though for great flavour, which is good, because some of them are more speciality ingredients. We just chose one, and we LOVED our Buddha’s Delight. Fried Tofu/cottage cheese Fried or Braised Wheat Gluten mushrooms Texture Texture ingredients give the dish some heft and interest in your mouth. We love the texture, so we chose a few of these ingredients to amp up our Buddha’s Delight. Fresh Mushrooms Napa Cabbage Baby Bok Choy Bean mushrooms broccolis Colour ingredients are purely optional. They should be added in less quantity than the ingredients in the “texture” category, because these guys are more like accents to the dish. Carrots Snow Peas Baby Corn Peanuts Lotus Root Bean Thread noodles are also a common ingredient in Buddha’s Delight. They act to absorb the last of the liquid from the broth. If you don’t want to use bean thread noodles, you can create a slurry with 1 Tbsp corn starch and 1 Tbsp water and let that thicken up your broth at the end of cooking. Our Buddha’s Delight Recipe Traditional Buddha’s Delight can be time-consuming to make because it has a lot of vegetables that need to be prepared and cooked separately. For our recipe, we picked ingredients that would be easy to find and would cook together nicely to make the dish overall easier (and quicker) to come together. That way, it could even be a nice vegetarian meal for a weeknight’s dinner! Instructions Do Ahead Rinse the mushrooms and place them in a bowl. Cover them with water and let them rehydrate for 2 hours, until they are very soft. Once softened, remove the mushrooms from the water and place them on a plate. Reserve the soaking liquid for later. For the Dish Place the bean thread noodles in a bowl and cover them with warm water. Let the noodles stand for 5 minutes until they have softened. Drain the water and set the noodles aside. (if you are using bean thread noodles) Heat the vegetable oil in a large wok or deep skillet over medium-high heat. Add the green onions and ginger. Sauté for 30 seconds. Add the carrots to the wok, and sauté for 1 minute. Add the soaked mushrooms, bamboo shoots(optional), and fresh mushrooms. Sauté for 1 minute. Finally, add the cabbage and Bok Choy. Sauté for 30 seconds. Add the soy sauce and sugar. Add the rehydration liquid from the mushroom (or the vegetable stock). Cover the wok or skillet and steam the vegetable mixture over medium heat for 5 min Uncover the wok and turn heat to medium high. Taste the vegetables and add salt or more soy sauce, if necessary. Add the soaked bean thread noodles and mix them into the vegetables, using them to soak up any of the remaining liquid. What I followed is (mix 1-Tbsp corn-starch with 1-Tbsp water and add this slurry to the wok now. Sauté until the broth begins to thicken.) Remove the wok from the heat and drizzle the mixture with sesame oil, if desired. Serve immediately with rice, if desired. Did you make this recipe? Please let me know how it turned out for you!
