For Disney fans “in the know” (i.e. those obsessed with Disney) there’s been another 3D animated story in the works, but now Disney has released their official announcement for their 2016 movie, Moana! Moana is in good hands at Disney, being created by Ron Clements and John Musker, the team who brought us The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and The Princess and the Frog. The movie is set for release in 2016. Moana is part of a push for further representation of women of color in Disney movies, and will follow the journey of a teenage girl from the ancient South Pacific on a quest to find a mysterious island of legend.
@uberwren I never even thought of it that way actually. I guess I've always tried to focus on the positives of Disney include more diverse array of characters, but you have a good point. I think even Jasmine and Lilo also fit into this issue, although the Arabian Nights is very magical, it's still clearly set in the middle east, while Lilo is in Hawaii. I think it's something I'll need to think about more as I enjoy my Disney movies!
The countdown starts now.
I'm about to throw down a really unpopular opinion but I've got to say it: I'm really not looking forward to this and I'm honestly disappointed in Disney for it. This will be the forth "princess" style story from disney featuring a non-white character and the forth one locked into a set historical period and location. It frustrates me to no end that Disney seems incapable to imagining princesses in fantasy time periods and locations as being something other than white. Pocahontas, Mulan, and Tiana are the go to women of color in Disney and each of them exists in a real location in a real time period while the white princesses get to exist in fantasy lands with no names or dates. I appreciate that Disney is making an effort and expanded representation, but going for a real time and a real place further reinforces the idea that fantasy princesses and characters are all white.
Yay!!!! I can't wait for this!
This sounds really cool! I am always excited about new Disney movies :)
