-Hubert de Givenchy, one of the past century's most famous designers and the only major name surviving from the golden age of haute couture, has passed a damning verdict on the state of fashion today: "Vulgar."- Givenchy is by far my favorite designer (sorry Lanvin!) simply because of the way that it's founder views his work and the state of the fashion world. While Hubert de Givenchy is known and loved for his haute couture, it is his ready-to-wear that, in my opinion, really changed the fashion world. He was able to completely change women's evening wear into what it is today. His 1954 Separates collection gave women beautifully constructed pieces as an alternative to an evening gown. This didn't happen overnight though, and his style didn't drastically change from one season to the next. He was consistent, only slowly morphing into a new style based on various inspirations. "Fashion should evolve slowly, without any revolution," he said. "Only in this way a dress can be loved and last. I do not say this to boast, but when seeing those designs [images in an exhibition from his design days], we observe that it is not so far from fashion." Givenchy asks current designers to focus on creating timeless pieces and to take time to really explore their collections before jumping in another direction. He preaches the slow-and-steady approach, and it has clearly worked for him.
As much as I may love fashion as a means of self expression and art, I'm terrible at designers, but even I know and love Givenchy. He is truly visionary and inspirational!
My friend who is a designer is a huge fan of Givenchy, and now I can see why. Fashion is definitely an art, not just making clothes, and I think that Givenchy works hard to make sure no one forgets that.
I love this!! Givenchy is so great :)
Givenchy is a boss, he IS fashion. I agree with his approach to style and think that fashion is becoming too much about who makes the most noise versus who makes the right statement.
