Bruce Bochy is facing turmoil in his bullpen and it will be up to him to fix that heading into Game 3 of the World Series. Two of his bullpen arms can no longer be trusted.
Jean Machi and Hunter Strickland have both shown that they cannot be trusted in the playoffs with a game on the line. While Machi was effective in the regular season with a 2.58 ERA in 71 appearances, he has lost command with his split-finger fastball and his October ERA is now at a whopping 11.57.
Hunter Strickland in the meanwhile has thrown 5.1 October innings in which he has given up 4 HRs. That is simply too big of a risk and Bochy has to realize that by now. The 26-year-old was called up too soon and is not ready.
Tim Lincecum would have been the answer to help the Giants out but he is now heading for an MRI which will have significant implications on the WS. Without Lincecum, Bochy will be left with Javier Lopez, Jeremy Affeldt, Sergio Romo, and closer Santiago Casilla. Bochy may be forced to use Petit to pitch the 7th and 8th innings if he has a lead.
We shall see how the "Genius" manages things and we will also have to see how Yost manages around his pitchers hitting.
