A Decade of Okami and Hope for a Sequel
For anyone who doesn't know, Okami was a beautifully rendered and designed game for the Playstation 2 that came out 10 years ago (going by the Japan release date of 4/20/06). In commemoration of this decade of Okami, the game's lead character designer Ken'ichirō Yoshimura tweeted a picture of this celebratory artwork. He also talked about how strange it is to reach this 10-year mark for Okami after also reaching the 10-year mark with another game that he had worked on: Viewtiful Joe, which was released in 2003 and hit the decade mark a few years ago. Yoshimura must have been afflicted with nostalgia glasses, because he also tweeted about how he'd like to make an Okami sequel while is still lives. Obviously this is far from any kind of confirmation or really even a hint of possibility, but I think when you've got the lead character design interested in maybe doing some more design, it's something we can at least be hopeful about. Okami was a game that really helped push the argument for games as works of art. Contemporaries of the title in 2006 would have been some tom Clancy stuff, but then also Bioshock shortly after Okami's release. Games were really starting to take off as artistic endeavors and not just mindless shooters. Seeing another Okami on the current generation of consoles would be amazing.
