There are plenty of foods nowadays that are promoted for their health benefits because they are filled with antioxidants and vitamins up the wazoo. But what are these 'antioxidants' and why do we need them in our diet? Normally we would think that oxygen is good for our bodies, which it is, until there is oxidation in our cells. The oxygen will cause cells to break apart and reform into chemically unbalanced structures. It’s rarely a good idea to mess with cell structure, and it can get really bad when the cells undergo oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has been linked to serious diseases like cancer, heart disease, stroke, aging, diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s, autoimmune diseases, cognitive decline, and eye conditions. Antioxidants are chemicals (both naturally occurring and man-made) that can prevent or slow this kind of cell damage. (Antioxidant = Antioxidation. Get it?) Natural antioxidants are mainly found in fruits and vegetables, but can also be manufactured in supplement form. But here's the kicker -- There’s very little actual scientific proof that antioxidants are the end-all-be-all to protect us from heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Most foods that contain antioxidants are also rich in many other nutrients, so even if there is no overwhelming evidence that antioxidants can fight diseases, you are getting a ton of other healthy goodies when digging into that bowl of blueberries. Here's a list of antioxidant rich foods ~ Red kidney beans Blueberries Cranberries Artichoke Prune (and Plums!) Strawberries Pecan Russet Potato Cherries Red Delicious Apples
is pomegrenates also an anti oxidant??
Wow, this is really really interesting.
These are all of my favorite foods so I eat them all the time regardless of its health factor!
I actually never questioned what antioxidants did, this is really informative!
I guess its true that foods with antioxidants are also filled with other things so the worst that can happen from focusing on eating these foods is getting extra vitamin C!
