Researchers confirmed these results by accounting for other risk factors like family history of heart disease, smoking habits, physical activity levels and use of wrist-worn monitors that monitor heart rate and sleep. Sex was also considered because women reported more issues sleeping than men; however sex did not have an effect on how heart disease and sleep related relationships developed. Results of the study were surprising in that both people who sleep extensively and those who sleep sparingly seemed to have equal heart disease risks. But when looking at data based on timing of sleep onset, night owls had higher heart disease risks than early birds. While it's unknown exactly why this may be related to body regulation of cortisol hormone, which reduces stress levels while keeping blood pressure stable during the night time hours.
