Internet Tax Causes Massive Protests in Hungary
Ten of thousands of Hungarians march during a protest against a new tax on Internet data transfers, October 28, 2014. The Hungarian government had planned to tax internet data transfers at a rate of 150 Hungarian Forint per gigabyte. (about US $0.62 per gigabyte) Opposer of this tax say the Internet tax threatens the further growth of the Internet as well as freedom of information. Zsolt Varady, an internet entrepreneur and founder of a now-defunct Hungarian social network iwiw.hu, told the crowd that the tax threatened to undermine Internet freedoms. I have feared monetization or taxation of the internet for some time now. It is my hope that the Hungarian people bring about enough of an uproar that the law is thrown out, setting a precedent for the reaction to such laws for other governments around the world.
