World's Biggest Chocolate-Maker Says We're Running Out Of Chocolate
I know you want to, but don't panic. We will get through this. Mars, Inc. and Barry Callebaut, the two largest chocolate makers in the world, is basically telling everyone that we are eating too much chocolate and it's all our fault. Chocolate deficits, although humorous to think about, are actually a real thing. It's when the farmers of the world are producing less cocoa then what we are eating. Last year, the world ate roughly 70,000 metric tons more cocoa than it produced. By 2020, the two chocolate-makers warn that that number could swell to 1 million metric tons, a more than 14-fold increase; by 2030, they think the deficit could reach 2 million metric tons. If we don't stop soon, chocolate will basically be worth it's weight in gold (not that it isn't in our hearts already). So what can we expect? Well, for one, we can expect weaker chocolate. Don't expect to get that nearly pure 70% cocoa dark chocolate, but a measly 5-10%. Trust me, this is for the greater good. If we reduce our cocoa intake we can make it last longer!
