Winter Skincare from Head to Toe
Regardless of what your snow-filled boots might feel like, winter is dry! It can be a horrible time for your skin thanks to the cold weather, dry air, and unnatural heat when you're indoors. I put together a little guide for how to beat this season and keep your skin bright and beautiful. Head - Moisturizing shampoo, especially for your scalp. Try Head and Shoulders, or combine essential oils in a bottle with some simple, unscented shampoo: 2 ounces unscented shampoo 20 drops lavender essential oil 10 drops carrot seed essential oil 5 drops rosemary essential oil 5 drops sandalwood essential oil 5 drops palmarosa essential oil Body - For washing your body, essential oils will lock in moisture and keep your arms, torso, and chest from feeling the negative effects of the weather. Try making a cleansing oil you can use as a moisturizer twice daily, or use as an oil cleanser before bedtime: 1/2 ounce jojoba oil 4 1/2 ounces macadamia oil 30 drops carrot seed essential oil Legs - Legs are often forgotten when it comes to moisturizing because they are covered in pants, tights, and high socks all the time. Be sure to keep them smooth and moisturize with a body butter like this one: 1 container cocoa butter 2 cups sweet almond oil 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla essential oils Place cocoa butter in freezer for 10 minutes until it pops out of the container easily, then place in a saucepan and melt over gentle heat. Add sweet almond oil and continue heating just until liquid has clarified. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla oil. Let cool into a salve-like cream. - Believe it or not, people shave their legs during winter! If you're one of these rare birds, try this shaving cream that won't be too harsh on your legs: 2 tablespoons tamanu oil 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil 2 tablespoons cocoa butter or shea butter 1 1/2 cups distilled water 1 teaspoon baking soda 4 tablespoons castile soap 1/2 cup aloe vera gel or honey 12 drops lavender essential oil Heat the tamanu and sweet almond oils and butter in a double boiler at a low heat. Stir until the mixture is clear, then pour into a large bowl and let cool. In another pan, heat the water. Then add the baking soda and castile soap, stirring until completely diluted. Add the aloe vera gel or honey to this solution and stir. Pour the soap mixture into the bowl with the now-room-temperature oil mixture. Add essential oil. Blend everything very well with a hand mixer or blender. For best results, blend for two minutes, stop, and then blend again for another two minutes. Feet - My feet always suffer the most during winter. To avoid those cracked heels and flaky feet, try this soothing foot oil: 1 ounce tamanu oil 4 drops tea tree essential oil 4 drops peppermint essential oil 4 drops sandalwood essential oil Blend essential oils into tamanu oil. Apply to the feet multiple times (and at least twice) throughout the day.

Even in warmer climates, winter air is significantly drier. These are all great ideas and I especially love the foot oil (peppermint will make your feet smell great!)

@galinda - great tips! Do you have any suggestions for cracking fingers and joints? Every winter (and it's already started) my knuckles and fingertips (near my nails) crack and it's extremely painful. I have naturally dry skin so I'm very conscientious with applying lotion, but I still have persistent cracks. Some even bleed! Ouch! I'd love any insider tips you have for this problem! Or if anyone else out there experiences this and has found a solution!
