Are you ready for something sappy, something epic, something festive, something funny and something that makes you cry? Then you're ready for the Holiday Movie Season! In my experience, that's the general formula for the December movie lineup each year. It's one of the big movie release seasons, along with Thanksgiving and summer. There are quite a few movies coming out - so I wanted to give you my Top 5 picks for December movies (being released this month, not just playing this month). 1. Exodus: Gods and Kings Release Date: December 12 Please are usually in a more religious mood during the holidays, so it's a perfect time to break out the Old Testament! I decided not to watch Noah, because it just seemed so over the top, but I feel a lot friendlier toward Exodus because a) it's Christian Bale, which already makes it a million time better than Russell Crowe as Noah, in my opinion and b) the story feels like less of an exaggeration, since the biblical narrative is full of epic, fantastic events, armies and battles (there wasn't a lot of exciting battling in the Noah Bible story - the animals and the massive flood were pretty much epic enough). I was also a big fan of the Charlton Heston version, The Ten Commandments, and the style of the preview gives it a similar mood. I'm excited! 2. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Release Date: December 17 Guys, I don't even know where to start - so I won't. I am a massive Tolkien fan and there is no way I wouldn't watch or recommend that every other human person watch this movie. Sure, the Hobbit movies take many liberties, necessarily. But every single one has still felt like a magical adventure. I've come to expect it of the holidays, and once they are finished - I'll keep watching them on DVD every December. Huzzah! 3. Annie Release Date: December 19 I am bringing a box of tissues. Seriously, though, I cried in the preview. I really love the casting and the music - and I'm ready to enjoy some laughs, some tears, some singing along, just your basic holiday magic formula! 4. Unbroken Release Date December 25 I'm very curious about this movie directed by Angelina Jolie. What draw me to it most is the real-life story - it's about Olympic distance runner and war hero Louie Zamperini and his survival in a raft with other crewmen for 47 days after a plane crash in WWII. As if that wasn't enough, he was then caught by the Japanese Navy and taken to a POW camp. I may not be in the mood to watch it right on Christmas day, but an amazing story of survival that can move and inspire is a perfect movie for the holiday season, in my opinion. 5. Into the Woods Release Date: December 25 This I would watch on Christmas Day! Fairy tales are a perfecting pairing with the holiday mood - especially if they involve humor, a lot of music and a great cast (including Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and others). I'm also very intrigued by the fact that the movie brings several Brothers Grimm stories together: Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood. What movies will you be watching in theaters this month? Let me know in the comments!
