Are you a film lover but feel that theaters in Jakarta do not really cater to your taste in film? Would you like to learn more about directors from different corners of the world? Do you want to watch foreign films and share opinions with like-minded people? Here is something a little different for you. Every Sunday evening at 6 p.m., a community of alternative cinema lovers gather to watch a foreign film, and discuss it afterward. The movie starts rolling at 7 p.m., providing time at the beginning of the meet up to chat with other attendees. The weekly movie nights are held at Beehive Cafe at Jl. Fatmawati Raya No. 39, formerly known as F39, where you can find the necessary space, big screen and the loudspeakers to project the selected movies. The cafe offers a very serene atmosphere in a quaint open-air setting in the middle of the always hectic Jl. Fatmawati connecting Blok M to Cilandak in South Jakarta. The street might be busy, but traffic noise does not disturb the tranquility of the cafe, which features bamboo buildings, garden, a pool table, a wide selection of fresh juices, superfood smoothies, wines, colds beers and reasonably priced wholesome foods. There is no better place in Jakarta to escape the city’s crowds and just hang out while relaxing, eating healthy food, discussing ideas and watching foreign movies. All that is asked of you is to “bring yourself and your good mood”. These events are organized by a couchsurfing group of alternative cinema lovers. They are free and open to all. So consider this an open invitation to join in on the Sunday night movie nights. Every week, around eight to 10 movies are suggested by the organizers, which are then submitted for voting. The movie that gets the most votes is screened. The selected films have usually won many international awards and are screened in their original language with English subtitles. In the past, they have included Offside from Iran, The Crazy Stranger from Romania and many more.
