Finally, Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as himself - a superhero! Haha :) Seriously, though - I'm really excited about the news that he's been cast by Marvel to play Doctor Strange, a silver-age comics superhero created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Can't picture Cumberbatch in tights and a cape? Well, fortunately, this role is a little bit different. In case you haven't heard of Doctor Strange, he's a neurosurgeon who becomes a Sorcerer Supreme, thereby gaining the powers to protect us earthlings against magical threats. I like the idea of him as a super-sorcerer neurosurgeon. What do you think? If you ask me - he's already played a superhero. I think Sherlock's super-powers of deduction should count! He's even got an outfit... There is so much casting news out there these days that I've decided to start rating the casting: Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange: 5 out of 5 scalpels. In other underwhelming news, Ryan Reynolds is going to be in a comics movie AGAIN. *groan* I know there are other actors who have been in more superhero movies, but I think the people who can do that are on a very short list. On top of it, he's played two separate comic book characters (he previously played Green Lantern) - which I think is kind of weird already. The news is that he will be reprising his role of Deadpool, the Marvel antihero from "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." I'm not feeling great about this movie, first of all, or his ability to carry it. I enjoy Ryan Reynolds a lot as the lead in comedic roles, but after what happened with Green Lantern - I feel like they're not really setting him up for success. I will probably see it anyway, and I hope to be pleasantly surprised. But I'm not counting on it. Excited to see Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange! Now that is one acting hire I fully support
No doubt for Cumberbatch, but I genuinely hope for Reynolds' success in his next superhero role.
