It seems like things are turning for the worse. While there has been mostly peaceful civil demonstrations for equal rights, there is now irrational killing of 2 innocent police officers. Ismaaiyl Brinsley killed two officers on December 20th, as they sat as part of an anti-terrorism patrol. The officers were identified as Liu Wenjin and Raphael Ramos. Brinsley apparently shot and killed the officers "execution style." He went up to them and shot the first officer in the head. After murdering both officers, he ran into the subway and shot himself. Those are the facts. It is horrifying to think that NYPD are essentially being targeted like this by anyone. These are the same brave men and women who risked their lives on 9/11. These are the same officers who risk their lives everyday for people like us. And this is not the first incident. Only 2 months ago, Zale Thompson attacked officers in the street with an axe. Yes, these are only 2 incidents, but jsut 1 is too many! I am not saying that there are no officers who abuse their power. I am not saying that we all feel this hatred towards officers (there were countless vigils for the fallen officers), but how many times have we heard people refer to cops as "pigs"? Is it ok to call them that even once? Al Sharpton was quoted as saying: "The Garner family and I have always stressed that we do not believe that all police are bad, in fact we have stressed that most police are not bad." Is that really what he wants to stress? Not all cops are bad? How about most cops are heroes? This is Al Sharpton, one of the most respected civil rights leaders! I do believe that this mentality of blaming one another is stopping (people are rallying for all victims), but I hope that it happens before someone else has to lose their life.
