Don't Fear, January TV Premieres Are Almost Here!

Although December is full of holidays gatherings, outings and even movie and television marathons - it also has a significant dry spell as our favorite shows take a winter break. Don't despair, though! January brings a new year, and its own set of premieres - both new shows and old shows that are starting late in the season. I like to lay them out and figure out what I need to set on my DVR - so here are my picks for the January premieres: Sunday, Jan. 4 8 p.m.: Galavant (ABC) 9 p.m.: Downton Abbey (BBC) Finally!! Downton Abbey is mere days away! If you want to share more of my excitement about this show, you can go here: http://www.vingle.net/posts/609217 I'm pretty excited to see what Galavant turns out to be like. Here's the description: "A powerhouse trio -- screenwriter Dan Fogelman, award-winning composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater -- have teamed up to create an epic musical comedy fairy tale. Once upon a time, a dashing hero named Galavant embarks on a quest to restore his "happily ever after" when he loses Madalena, the love of his life, to evil King Richard. Galavant is prepared to use his many skills to win back his beautiful lady and avenge her, but he is surprised by the twists and turns he encounters along the way." Tuesday, Jan. 6 9 p.m.: Marvel's Agent Carter (ABC) I'm not sure there's room for another Avengers spin-off alongside Agents of Shield, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Here's the premise: "Agent Carter is an upcoming American television series created for ABC by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, inspired by the films Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and the Marvel One-Shot short film of the same name. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. The series features the Marvel Comics character Peggy Carter, with Hayley Atwell reprising her role from the film series, as she must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark while trying to navigate life as a single woman in 1940s America. Several characters from Marvel Cinematic Universe films appear throughout the series." Wednesday, Jan. 7 10 p.m.: American Horror Story midseason return (FX) As I mentioned in another card (http://www.vingle.net/posts/638833), Neil Patrick Harris will be making an appearance. I still haven't made up my mind about whether that's enough to get me past my fear, though! Thursday, Jan. 8 10 p.m.: Portlandia (IFC), Archer (FX) Parenthood midseason return (NBC), Babylon (Sundance TV) Wow! What a night! Lots of show watching/recording to be done here. I have to say I'm most excited about Babylon, a new Danny Boyle (the Oscar-winning director behind Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire, among others) show airing on Sundance TV. It looks awesome, and stars Brit Marling (who I loved in Another Earth and I Origin). Here's the scoop: Babylon "delivers a satirical look at the inner workings of a UK police department and the media necessary to inform the public. Fresh off of her hit TED talk, American new media PR maven Liz Garvey (Brit Marling) arrives to head up publicity at the London police force, all guns blazing and without a clue of what she’s walking into. This fish out of water story hilariously shows the clash of cultures and age, the embrace of transparency and technology as well as the real underbelly of the relationship between media and government." Friday, Jan. 9 8 p.m.: Glee (Fox) Final season, I think. I've kind of lost interest, but I'll keep watching to the end. At this point I'm in it for the performances. We'll see if that's enough to carry it through. Sunday, Jan. 11 9 p.m.: Girls (HBO) 10 p.m.: House of Lies (Showtime) I'm really not on the bandwagon here. I've yet to see Lena Dunham's show Girls, and have just been curious about House of Lies (which has actors I like). Maybe this is the time to check them out. Tuesday, Jan. 13 8 p.m.: Parks and Recreation (NBC) Yes!! And awww :( The time to say goodbye to this amazing show is finally upon us, and I plan to relish all the moments we have left. More Knope, more Swanson, more Haverford, more of pre-Guardians of the Galaxy Andy Dwyer - more hilarious, feel-good comedy to enjoy. I can't wait! Also I'm sad :( Wednesday, Jan. 14 10 p.m.: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FXX) 10:30 p.m.: Broad City (Comedy Central) More shows I've heard a lot about but haven't gotten around to watching. I love the Sunny ads, though! Friday, Jan. 16 9 p.m.: 12 Monkeys (Syfy) So curious to see what Syfy is going to do with the story from one of my favorite movies. It could be cool, it could be a disaster. I will be watching. Saturday, Jan. 17 9 p.m.: The Musketeers (BBC America) The Musketeers have been done SO. MANY. TIMES. But of course it's such a classic work of literature and such a great story that *maybe* there's room for more. It stars the new 12th Doctor Who. We'll see about this one. Tuesday, Jan. 20 10 p.m.: Justified (FX) I love Timothy Oliphant, and this show is just classic him. Saturday, Jan. 24 9 p.m.: Black Sails (Starz) Pirates are almost always awesome, especially ones with literary connections, so I'm curious about this show. I might have to marathon-watch Season 1 in preparation. Do you know anything about it? Is it worth it? Here's the description: "A prequel to the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel "Treasure Island," "Black Sails" is a pirate adventure that centers on the tales of Captain Flint, who has a reputation throughout the West Indies as being the most brilliant, most feared of all the Golden Age pirates. It's 1715, and as Flint fights for the survival of New Providence Island -- a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers -- in the wake of threats from British and Spanish forces, he aligns himself with Eleanor Guthrie, daughter of the local kingpin, to hunt the ultimate prize and ensure his people's survival. But standing in the way are rival captains, Eleanor's intrusive father, and perhaps the bigger obstacle of all: John Silver, a young, fast-talking, authority-flouting sailor recently added to Flint's crew." Wednesday, Jan. 28 10 p.m.: The Americans (FX) I really have some catching up to do, but I like this show a lot. Thursday, Jan. 29 10 p.m.: Parenthood series finale (NBC) I thought I would be way more bummed about the end of this show. I was a huge fan for the first few seasons. But unfortunately (or fortunately?) they've made the story so excruciating and unreasonable that it will be kind of a relief to see it resolve. I've been doing a lot of reading of recaps, just to avoid excessive frustration, but I'll tune in for this one. What are you guys looking forward to this January? Any of these shows call out to you? Can you vouch for some of the ones I haven't seen? Don't be shy - let me know in the comments!

NO ROMANCE ALLOWED Movie Binge!
For all the anti-Valentines Lovebugs out there! There have been some amazing cards for the Cupid's Countdown event, so I hope mine isn't a disappointment. I signed up to share some of my favorite un-romantic movies for those of you who just aren't in the mood for cute hearts or cupids. I get it. Sometimes it's just too much! Thankfully I've got enough recommendations to fill up your date night (or your I-don't-have-a-date-and-I-don't-care night). I added some tv recs as well in case you need to binge several hours' worth of entertainment. No Romance If you want something fun that doesn't have a romantic sub-plot, you should definitely check out... Big Hero 6- A kid loses a brother but gains a robot friend. So it's mostly fun. Captain America: Winter Soldier- An American hero takes down... America. Brave- This girl really does not wanna get married. She just wants to shoot things. Tokyo Godfathers- Fun Christmas tale about homeless people and an abandoned baby. The Emperor's New Groove- A man and a llama save the day. Ghostbusters 2- Somehow all of New York is convinced to be happy for 5 minutes. TV series: Fullmetal Alchemist, Agent Carter Pair with popcorn covered in melted discount chocolate, beer, and buddies. Anti-Romance If you're in the mood for a movie where everything you love dies or that friendship is more important than feelings, I've got good news for you! Harold and Maude- A rom-com about depression and death. Brilliant! Thelma & Louise- Two gal pals murder someone and go on the run. Salt- Will they or won't they? Try is she a spy or is she a spy? I think she's a spy. Bachelorette- Three kind of bitter bachelorettes ruin their friend's wedding. Batman: The Dark Knight- The world is absurd and everything you love dies. TV series: Master of None, Elementary Pair with wine and something covered in garlic- because you're not kissing ANYONE! The opposite of a Rom-Com... Is disturbed and depressing I guess. Watching these will make you forget your troubles, because you'll be concerned with things that are much worse. The Road- People eat people after the apocalypse. Saw- Wanna see the hot guy from A Princess Bride get tortured? Sure you do! Silence of the Lambs- More cannibalism! The Virgin Suicides- Spoiler: somebody dies. No Country For Old Men- Nothing good happens but nobody gets eaten. TV series: Broadchurch, Black Mirror Pair with comfort food and a well-lit apartment. EXPLOSIONS Car chases! Stuff getting blown up! Anything romantic takes a back burner to quippy one-liners and excessive bullets everywhere! Die Hard- Yippee ki-yay motherf------! Deadpool- Despite those misleading ads, Deadpool is about dick jokes and grenades. Aliens 2- DO YOU WANNA SEE AN ALIEN COME OUT OF SOME GUY'S GUT!?!?!?! The Avengers- Do you wanna see a lot of aliens ruin New York City? TV series: Jessica Jones, Homeland, BBC Sherlock. Pair with shots and a good drinking game. Hope that covers all your Anti-Valentine's Day needs! Honestly I had so much fun putting this list together. Thank you Lovebugs for being part of such an awesome event, and lots of love to @nicolejb and @AlloBaber for making it happen!
