1. Sit Up Tall Keeping your shoulders back and spine straight makes you look taller and slimmer as well as self-confident. According to Kelly McGonigal, PhD, a health psychologist at Stanford University, "Your brain is constantly checking in with the rest of your body to find out how you're feeling. When your posture is erect, the message it gets is: I feel good about myself. " 2. Don't Judge Yourself Don't make any judgments when you look in the mirror. You have the power to see a scar, blemish, or "imperfection" as a flaw or as something that is simply a part of you. Try to look at yourself the way you would those of your best friend—with appreciation and acceptance, not criticism. 3. Find Something You Love About Yourself When you look in the mirror, what is the first thing you look at? Instead of zoning in on your least favorite feature, turn your gaze on one that you like. When your eyes take in something that pleases you, your entire mood will be lifted. 4. SMILE! A smile has the ability to lift the muscles around the eyes and lips, for a more youthful appearance, AND it can generate a feel-good ripple effect: Your brain gets a serious mood boost, and then you'll have the confidence boost from people smiling back at you. Step back from any stress or unhappiness you're feeling and just take a nice, deep breath. 6. Appreciate Compliments I am the worst at receiving compliments. Seriously. But I'm learning to stop deflecting any praise about my appearance. Simply saying "thank you" when someone compliments me actually makes me feel much better than denying that my hair looks good or something. Accepting the compliment automatically boosts your mood. 7. Give Yourself a Reality Check! Unless you live under a rock (and if you're reading this, you probably don't), you're constantly surrounded by images of thin women with perfect hair and skin who look like they wake up that way. It's human nature to compare yourself —but if you're not a supermodel, you'll come up short. When you catch yourself comparing, remember that these pictures are incredibly unrealistic. You are beautiful, and if you tell yourself that a few times a day, you'll start to realize it.
