I can't remember the last IKEA commercial I have actually seen on TV. In fact, I can't remember a single IKEA ad. But a friend sent me the first of these ads today and I am kind of baffled. IKEA ads are really, really....strange? Seriously; I don't know if I'm missing some symbolism or something, but this first ad confuses me. It's a bunch of shirt/birds. Flying around. Looking kind of sad at times (can an animated shirt look sad?). And then they fly into a closet. "Because storage is wonderful." Uh...? So I did some digging, and discovered this ad was on the IKEA UK channel, and watched another UK commercial. Its on the second slide and is basically a spinning kitchen falling into the place for the family to enjoy a meal together. Ok. Cool. I get this one. IKEA has cool stuff for your kitchen. Which brings me to commercial three. Commercial three, I would argue, is better than some movies I've watched. In 1 minute and 30 seconds, I actually feel moved by a commercial about beds. While I can't say it makes me want to buy a bed, it does make me want to read more. Check out the writing: "Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air; And—like the baseless fabric of this vision— The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, And like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. ..." Beautiful. Seriously, beautiful. Props to Mother (the name of their ad agency used for UK ads).
