There are some pretty awesome movies waiting just around the corner in 2015 - and I can't wait to get to them! I previously posted a card with the first five of my list of SciFi and Fantasy movies to watch this year (http://www.vingle.net/posts/661455), picked out of the very long list of movies coming out compiled by io9 (link attached). Now, here are my next five picks:
6. The Lazarus Effect (Feb. 27)
This movie seems to be based on the very classic premise of the fantasy-horror story "The Monkey's Paw" by W. W. Jacobs from 1902 (and basically every genie story). The basic lesson? Be careful what you wish for - you might get something you don't want. The plot of this one is that some medical students have figured out how to bring dead people back to life. They start with a dead student named Zoe (played by Olivia Wilde). The question is whether they've really brought her back - or if it's something more sinister. It also is very much like the anime "Full Metal Alchemist" and also Frankenstein. So the premise is definitely not new, but I'm still curious to see what they do with it. Also Mark Duplass and Troy from Community are in it, which is great.
7. Home (March 27)
Pretty much the most adorable alien invasion movie ever made. It's an animated movie based on the children's book "The True Meaning of Smekday." In the story, a girl named Tip befriends an alien. However, there are more of his kind coming to Earth! I don't think I'll be able to resist. Oh, and Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna do voice acting for it.
8. Ex Machina (April 10)
I feel really tentative about this movie, because the irresistible AI premise has been done so often by now, but io9 points out that it's the directorial debut of Alex Garland, the writer for 28 Days Later (one of my favorites) and Dredd. The trailer is pretty interesting and engaging - and I think I'll probably take a chance on it. I hope it doesn't disappoint!
9. The Moon and the Sun (April 10)
Based on an award-winning SciFi novel by Vonda McIntyre that combines historical romance with a first-contact tale. Unfortunately, this movie stars Pierce Brosnan, who really gets on my nerves. But I really want it to be good. And there are mermaids! I couldn't find a trailer - but I included a creepy Pierce Brosnan image from the movie.
10. Mad Max: Fury Road (May 15)
Yes, you read that correctly. It's MAD MAX!!! I'm so happy that George Miller has brought back the post-apocalyptic series. Here's the io9 description: "This time, Tom Hardy is Max, and he's teaming up with Furiosa (Charlize Theron) to fight a warlord named Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Miller basically used incredibly detailed storyboards instead of a script for this film, resulting in what looks like a uniquely crazy ride." Charlize Theron with a close-shaved head? Epic sandstorms? Desert post-apocalyptic death-vehicle battles? I'm so excited!
