[11th-Jan-15] Live Card: Arsenal - Stoke City

On this Sunday morning Arsenal host their bogey team, Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium as they try to put themselves back into the Champions League places. 4' - Rosinski with a close chance there. Trickled it wide. 6' - GOAL! Sanchez puts in a beautiful cross that finds Koscielny and Arsenal are quickly up 1-0 here. IT's almost as if Stoke we half-heartedly defending there. Arsenal 1-0 Stoke City 11' - Stoppage here as Debuchy looks to have taken a knock. Didn't look like much put he was pushed off a ball going out at the byline and tumbled a bit. 13' - Looks more serious as Debuchy's been subbed out. Stoke with a free kick in the attacking third here but it's comfortably cleared away. 16' - Big chance. Bit of a scrap in midfield before Sanchez wins the ball and an advantage. He finds Oxlade-Chamberlin on the reverse side who shoots from 18 yards out but it trickles just wide of the far post. 17' - They're just actually stretchering Debuchy off now. 19' - Monreal cross is put out for a corner. Nothing comes of it. 20' - Arsenal get the ball wide on the attack here before Sanchez cuts it back for Giroud from 16 yards out but a quality save from Begovic denies Arsenal a second. 23' - Stoke are having trouble dealing with Arsenal's midfield pressing. Really can't hold onto the ball for any period of time. Wonder what changes Mark Hughes will make at half-time. 26' - Borjan wins a free kick here right on the edge of the box but now near the byline. Arsenal not using Szczesny. Free kick is cut back but Walters skies it. 28' - Arsenal corner. Cazola takes it but Crouch gets it away. 33' - GOAL! Fabulous goal. Sanchez wins the ball in the attacking thid before a give and go allows him to run into the box from the near post. He fakes cutting in towards the centre before slotting the ball with his right foot right under the near post. Brilliant run frmo the Chilean. Arsenal 2-0 Stoke City 39' - We're going to have a lot of stoppage for the first have as an Arsenal defender, I can't see who at the moment, is receiving treatment on the pitch. Looks to be a gash right on his eyebrow but I can't confirm. 40' - It was Monreal receiving treatment and after about a 4 minute delay we're playing again. 45' + 3' - We're playing 5 minutes of stoppage. Stoke concede a corner here that they clear away. 45' + 4' - Sanchez finds Oxlade-Chamberlin who fires from 23 yards out. It's high and half-time is right on the doorstep now. Half-Time Arsenal 2-0 Stoke City Stoke need pace in the squad as they're just on the back foot to everything so far, including defending. 46' - Stoke have made two changes including bringing Sidwell on to start this second half. 49' - GOAL! This one's in the book. Arsenal free kick 18 years out goes through the legs of the wall and just squeaks into the near post. Sanchez again the scorer. Arsenal 3-0 Stoke City 52' - Wollscheid is booked for a tug on the shirt of Sanchez. 56' - Arsenal comfortable with giving Stoke more possession and the game;s in a bit of a lull now, but that's to be expected with Arsenal 3-0 up here. 58' - Stoke free kick from 21 yards out is shot wide of the left post. 61' - Arsenal win a corner and Cameron is booked for a pull back on Sanchez from earlier. Corner is cleared before Arsenal put it out for a goal kick. 63' - Half-chance for Stoke. Ball comes in for Crouch at the near post that he puts inches wide of goal. Keeper might have had it anyway but you've got to ask the question of the man. 64' - Crouch tries a sliding challenge that takes out his man and the big forward is booked. 67' - Oxlade-Chamberlin with a one-two with Cazorla who does have a hard angle and just puts it off the top of the bar. Theo Walcott is coming on for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin. 73' - Ozil is finally back from injury and is the final sub for Arsenal here as he's on for Giroud. 77' - Stoke have some good play as Ireland puts it into the box that Crouch flicks on for Cameron. He puts it into the net but it's called back and rightly so for offsides. 80' - Ha ha ha ha ha what a muppet! Sanchez puts in Walcott all alone but he slots it miles wide. Sanchez laughs it off but he's probably ready to choke the man. Sanchez could have had a go, grant it from a slightly tougher position only to give up his chance at a hat trick for Walcott to make it 4-0 but he shanks it! 86' - Ozil gets the ball down the right but it was a hard angle and he puts it no where near on goal. 90' + 2' - Just the two minutes of added time. Arsenal have the three points sealed. Full-Time Arsenal 3-0 Stoke City Done and dusted. Stoke didn't look like playing at all today and Arsenal took easy advantage of that. Very very straight-forward win for the Gunners.

[21st-Feb-15] Match Preview: Aston Villa – Stoke City
New Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood will take the reins for his first match in charge as the west midlands side host Stoke City. Carles Gil &Gabby Agbonlahor are set to return to the squad for Villa, which they remain without the services of Nathan Barker and Philippe Senderos at the back. Stoke City are also suffering from a few injuries and missing players, with captain Ryan Shawcross alongside Marc Muniesa on the injury list. American Geoff Cameron is also banned for the match but Stoke will have Marc Wilson & Erik Pieters available for selection. Form suggests a stale game. Villa have an appalling scoring record, the likes of which only Portsmouth avoided relegation with in previous Premier League campaigns, while Stoke City are coming off the back of 4-1 losses to Manchester City and Championship side Blackburn Rovers. Form also suggests the worst for Villa, having lost 5 consecutive Premier League games they could make it 6 in a row for the second time this season. They are also without a win in their last 10 games, managing only 3 points from them and have yet to win in the Premier League in over 2 months. The 12 goals scored in 25 games is also the lowest in Premier League history. Stoke City on the other hand have only lost one of their last 5 away Premier League games. Stoke also possess the second lowest shooting accuracy at 36.6% with only Aston Villa being worst but the Potters’ impressive disciplinary record could help them, being only one of two clubs (the other being Burnley) yet to have a player sent off this season. Striker Peter Crouch is also in form having netted in the last 3 games for Stoke. Predictions: Flat game but both sides have their chances. Villa fight well for a point. Aston Villa 0-0 Stoke City
To my sports fans...
I said this in a previous card, but I want you all to know that I don't think I'm going to be able to be on Vingle as much, at least for now. I am in my last semester of college right now and really need to focus on my studies as I finish my degree... plus... you know... that job search that everyone talks about! I've had so much fun being involved with all of you over the past few months through the MLB playoffs (how great were those Mets!?!?), EPL and NFL seasons - culminating with the Super Bowl next week! I know this community can be an amazing resource for everyone and I hope you all continue to share ideas, thoughts, favorite plays and players and games and everything else that I've seen go on here recently. You guys are the best! Thanks for reading and commenting on my posts! Arsenal Upsets Bayern Munich!
Arsenal managed to keep their hopes up in the UEFA Champions League as they collected their first win of the Champions League against Bayern Munich. They were on the verge of elimination after losing the first two matches against Olympiakos and Dinamo Zagreb. It was surely an upset considering the fact that Munich was a favorite to win the whole thing. But here's the thing. Today's match was more like a match between Arsenal's Petr Cech against Munich's Manuel Neuer. Just take a moment to appreciate the stellar performance that these two goalies put on tonight. Here are couple of saves by Neuer. And here are some by Cech. It was impossible to get behind these two until this happened. In the 77th minute of the game, just three minutes after Olivier Giroud replaced Theo Walcott, Giroud scored the first goal of the game. Neuer, who was having a perfect night, lost sight of the ball in the air and let this one get by him. Yes, the greatest goalkeeper in the world do make mistakes. Then this happened in the 94th minute to seal the win for Arsenal. It seemed like Neuer saved this one, but take a closer look. The ball had definitely passed the goal line! A goal from Mesut Ozil to make the match 2-0 and brings home the victory at Emirates Stadium. Cech definitely was the game changer and MVP for Arsenal, but I feel like Wenger really should be given credit for last night's win. He was well prepared and his strategy seemed to be effective against one the best teams in the world! What do my football (soccer) fans think of Arsenal's victory?
[25th-Apr-15] Match Preview: Stoke - Sunderland
Mar Muniesa looks set to miss the match with a calf injury but Stephen Ireland and Peter Odemwingie, the latter of which has been out since August, look possible for a return. Sunderland's Sebastian Larsson, Steven Fletcher, Emanuele Giaccherini, Ricky Alvarez, and Wes Brown are all out. The Black Cats' Adam Johnson is available despite being charged by the Durham police this week. Background Stoke enter the game requiring a last second goal to draw with West Ham and maintain 9th spot. The Potters are looking for another successful season in the top flight and will look to be finishing in the top half once again under Mark Hughes. Dick Advocat might have won the tyre-wear derby, but so did his predecessors. His predecessors also managed to keep the club up and with Sunderland only a point above the drop the task is a difficult one for Advocat with only 5 games to play. Head-To-Head Sunderland have just 1 win in their last 7 against Stoke City and 1 of their last 6 at the Britannia Stadium in the Premier League. Sunderland have just 1 win in their last 10 in all competitions, including their elimination from the FA Cup by League One side Bradford City. Sunderland have secured only 9 points in 2015 with only QPR's 8 being worse. Stoke are 5 points shy of setting a new club record for points in the Premier League. The Potters have never gone a top flight season without having a player sent off, but have yet to see the feat befall one of their players so far this season. In Stoke's last 18 games at home, they've kept 4 clean sheets. Prediction: Stoke are a good side and the Britannia is tough to play at. Stoke 2-0 Sunderland
[11th-Apr-15] Match Preview: West Ham United – Stoke City
West Ham’s Enner Valencia is fit enough to play but Hammers defender James Collins is out for the rest of the season after dislocating his shoulder. Stoke will be able to play Victor Moses, who could not play against parent club Chelsea last week but Marc Wilson is questionable as he will need a protective cast to play after breaking his hand. Jon Walters is also a game-time decision having picked up a minor-knee injury this week. Head-To-Head Stoke have not been beaten by West Ham in the last three matches between the sides and West Ham have been able to keep only 1 clean sheet against Stoke in the last 6 matches. Stoke come into the contest on a 3 game losing streak and having lost 7 of their 13 games against top half opposition. Stoke City boss Mark Hughes seems to have the better of his counterpart however, boasting a 6-3-1 record in his last 10 games against Sam Allardyce. West Ham’s form is nothing short of troubling, sitting at 1-0-4 in their last 5 games, 1-3-5 in their last 8. They also struggle to keep top half opposition off the scoring sheet, earning only 1 clean sheet against the current top 10. West Ham have also yet to score a penalty this season despite being awarded one on the opening day of the season against Spurs. West Ham have yet to concede a goal in the opening 15 minutes of any match at home this season, with only Arsenal able to match that record. The Hammers also boast the most headed goals in the league this season having scored 15 of them. Prediction: I really want West Ham to finish strongly but their poor run of form has gone on for way too long. Stoke are a tough side as well and are well managed by arguably the most under-rated Premier League manager at the time being in Mark Hughes. West Ham 0-1 Stoke City
EPL Match of the Week: ARSENAL vs. Chelsea
This week we've got a real gem to look forward to as Chelsea face Arsenal at the Emirates in the EPL. Here's how it all looks to me: Arsenal This could be the return to action for winger Alexis Sanchez, who has been out with injury since November. Arsenal have been playing great football even without him, but when he's healthy he can be easily one of the best players in the league. He can be a huge boost for an Arsenal team attempting to mount a major title challenge and fight off tough competition from Leicester City, Man City and Spurs. Their defense has been really solid with the emerging Hector Bellerin, while the midfield has the strings pulled by Mesut Ozil, who continues to prove that he is one of the best in the whole world. He leads the league in assists and is a real joy to watch. Chelsea We all know about Chelsea's struggles this season. They have been better since Guus Hiddink took over as manager, but still sit in 14th place. For me, a large part of their struggles comes down to the horrible form of Eden Hazard, who has completely failed to live up to the expectations he set for himself during last seasons' PFA Player of the Year winning campaign. He needs to be better, and if he is, Chelsea can mount a challenge toward the upper end of the table. Champions League football is out of the question, but they can still challenge for Europe and it may well start with a big match against Arsenal this weekend. My pick Chelsea have been looking better, but Arsenal are the best team in the league getting their best player back from injury. For me, that settles it. Arsenal 2, Chelsea 1. Who takes it for you? @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda @Bobs
[21st-Mar-15] Match Preview: Stoke City – Crystal Palace
Jon Walters looks set to play through a fractures cheekbone while Victor Moses will remain sidelined due to a hip injury for Stoke. Erik Pieters and Phillip Wollscheid are also game time decisions for the Potters. Crystal Palace look to possibly be without Wilfried Zaha, Jason Puncheon, and Jordon Mutch. Mile Jedinak remains suspended with Marouane Chamakh, Frazier Campbell, and Chun-Yong Lee all out due to injury still. Palace have won only 1 of their 7 ever top-flight meetings with Stoke back in 1979 and the Eagles enter the game with only one clean sheet in their last 9 games. The revival under Alan Pardew seems to be better on the road for Palace, dropping only 1 decision in their last 5 away from Selhurst Park but the Eagles have rescued the 2nd most points from losing positions, with only Spurs a point better. Stoke enter the game in good form, winning 5 and losing only 2 in their last 8 games at home with the 2 losses only being to 1st place Chelsea and 2nd place Manchester City. The Potters are also on course for their best ever season, needing only 9 more points the rest of the campaign to set a new club record. Stoke’s 15 goals conceded from set pieces is a worry, tied worst with Burnley but the club have yet to drop a single point when scoring first, a record they’ll look to continue. Predictions: Palace look to be almost safe but Stoke, much like Swansea, have has a quietly confident season. Hughes has them unbeatable at home at the moment and it looks with Palace’s injury the game will be too much. Stoke City 2-0 Crystal Palace

[Discussion] EPL's most UNDERrated player?
So after we talked about the most overrated players yesterday, it only makes sense to do the opposite today! Who are the most underrated players in the EPL? Riyad Mahrez - Leicester City While teammate Jamie Vardy gets lots of the headlines for his goal scoring, Mahrez has been an absolute standout for Leicester this season. He's turned in great performance after great performance and has even added to his game with some goals. He definitely deserves more credit. Yannick Bolasie - Crystal Palace You knew I had to include a Palace player on the list! At his best, Bolasie is an absolute terror down the wing or through the middle. He has pace and strength like any player in the league and just needs to round out his goalscoring form to make his game complete. He nearly made a big money move to Spurs over the summer but Palace held onto him, and with his form this season they'll be happy they did. Jack Butland - Stoke City While Butland is beginning to accumulate some accolades for his play this season in net for Stoke, it's time we start considering him one of the league's best keepers. He's got a little while to go before he unseats Joe Hart as England's #1, but it looks like the future of English goalkeeping is in safe hands with Butland's talent. Philippe Coutinho - Liverpool Sure, everyone knows that Coutinho is a great player, but I don't think he gets nearly enough credit for what he does for Liverpool. His work rate is off the charts and he has come up with some truly ridiculous goals to go along with amazing assists over the past few seasons. For my money, he's as good as attacking midfielders come in the Premiership. Romelu Lukaku - Everton Lukaku is a player whose stock has gone from way up to way down and now he's flying high again. After being a highly touted Chelsea youth product, Mourinho sold him away to Everton. He struggled for the Toffees at first but has come up with the best form of his career this season. At just 22 years old, the Belgian has a huge future ahead of him. I'm going with Coutinho as my choice. The man simply cannot be stopped and does not get enough credit! Who do you think? @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda
