Winter Drink: Hot Chocolate on the Trail
There are a bunch of different ways to make hot chocolate on the trail, and it's ridiculously easy since the only think you need to add is hot water, which, in many cases, can be easily heated up while camping or backpacking. The best things about hot chocolate on the trail in winter: give you a burst of energy in the morning to get you going while your longer lasting energy sets in, will satisfy your sweet tooth, will warm you up from the inside out, and it tastes great! And, there are so many variations you can try! All you need is this basic recipe (which I got from TrailCooking) and then you can make a bunch of different kinds of cocoa! Some great variations to try: - use low sugar variations - add cinnamon! - replace the chocolate chips with peanut butter chips for a PB Hot Chocolate - simplify the recipe to be just chocolate pudding mix and 2c. dry milk - add a kick in the morning by adding instant coffee or espresso to the mix - add brown sugar instead of regular sugar, for a different flavor -------------------------------------------------------------------- Sipping Hot Chocolate Recipe from TrailCooking.com Ingredients: ¼ cup dry milk ¼ cup cocoa powder ¼ cup granulated sugar Pinch fine sea salt 2 Tbsp chocolate chips Directions: 1. Mix the dry milk, cocoa powder, sugar and salt together, with a fork, until well mixed. 2. Divide in half, into two snack size bags. 3. Add 1 Tablespoon chocolate chips into each bag, seal tightly. 4. Mark each bag “Add 1 cup water”. In camp: 1. Add 1 bag mix to a mug. 2. Stir in 1 cup boiling water till smooth. Makes 2 servings total. Enjoy!

@treedweller If you like peanut butter you have to try the PB hot chocolate variation. swap the choco chips for peanut butter chips. It'll be soooo good
I'm gonna test out the brown sugar thing; I can't imagine how that'd taste. Kitchen taste test time!!!
@treedweller Me too, Swiss miss all the time. Can't believe I didn't think to try this. It's probably cheaper in the long run, too, though it does take a touch of prep work.
@happyrock Already bought the PB chips, just waiting for the new cocoa I ordered to arrive. @yakwithalan The prep work part of all this is kind of fun to me though
