I have always been the girl that thinks the party playlist is more important than the hors d'oeuvres, and I've tried to find the perfect recipe for a successful party. With the help of the lovely folks from, I've typed up a plan to help you build that perfect soundscape :) 1. Ease on Down the Road At the start of a party, it’s key to let your guests settle into things. Your music selections at the start of the night will set the stage for the rest of the evening, so don't pick anything that will put your guests in any specific mood. Think of a cafe soundtrack with a little more oomph. (Personal note- Miles Davis is NEVER the wrong answer!) Bossa nova is not to be underestimated. 2. Happy Together Familiarity breeds friendship, so go for some classics that anyone can agree on. You want to hear someone say, “Oh, I love this song” more than once! Think of songs that remind us of our younger selves: 90s R&b or even throwing it back to the 60s/70s. (Again, Miles Daivs, Marvin Gaye, TLC!) 3. Mystery Train Now that everyone is nice and comfortable, drop something in that is new. Give the people something they don’t yet know they love. Who knows - you might find someone who loves that underground artist that you admire and boom! perfect party convo. 4. Let's Dance It is not a true party until someone is busting a move. And the secret is in the beat. Try some American hip-hop, Electronica. Or any song by Robyn (seriously, take your pick!) 5. It's My Party For me, it is “Once in a Lifetime” by Talking Heads. My party will ALWAYS have Talking Heads. Choose the tracks that make you feel good and that feeds off of the energy of the room. You'll be happy, they'll be happy. 6. Love is a Two Way Street Time to look around. Have I mentioned my love for Lily Allen? Try Alt-J or Drake. Rihanna, “Take Care”. And finally, and only if they’ve earned it, drop “Get Me Home” by Foxy Brown. No explanation necessary.

Hahaha, I can't imagine playing bossa nova music at one of my parties. I can't pull off that level of classy.
