Merlin last night episode review!

A pair of old faces reappear in this week's episode of Merlin - 'Another's Sorrow' opens with Princess Mithian, last glimpsed in series four's 'The Hunter's Heart'. She has been captured by Morgana, who's managed to rope in yet another doltish warlord - the villainous Odin (Fintan McKeown) from series two's 'The Once and Future Queen' - to help her in her vendetta against Camelot. Morgana promises to hand over Arthur - who, if you'll remember, killed Odin's son in battle - to the tyrant if he helps her seize the throne. With her father King Rodor (James Fox) still held captive, Mithian rides to Camelot where she's rescued by the kingdom's gallant knights. Arthur's swiftly taken in by his one-time fiancée's sob story and it's easy to see why - her US show Made in Jersey might've just got the chop, but Janet Montgomery's star is on the rise Stateside for a reason. The glamorous 26-year-old is a talented performer, and it's great that Merlin was able to get her back. Unfortunately, Mithian's accompanied on her trip to Camelot by the elderly 'Hilda', who's so obviously Morgana in old lady make-up that it makes a mockery of much of the episode, bringing back unfortunate memories of when The Master used to pop up in '80s Doctor Who in some dodgy disguise. Credit where credit's due though; Morgana's true identity is quickly revealed to the viewer - we're not expected to be fooled for long - and her first transformation, glimpsed only as a dark reflection, is a nicely-handled moment. Only the canny Merlin (Colin Morgan) twigs that Mithian might have been coerced. You'd think by now people would have learned to listen to the young warlock, but instead even Gaius refuses to listen to him, which stretches credibility a little given how much they've been through together. With our hero's suspicions remaining unproven, Arthur and his knights ride out to rescue King Rodor, though not before we witness an interesting crinkle in his practically perfect marriage with Gwen, as she questions his motives for pursuing Odin. More scenes like this please. As we reach the episode's midpoint, the pace begins to quicken a little - Merlin learns the truth of Morgana's deception and is very nearly throttled Darth Vader style, and with his friend incapacitated in a kind of magical coma, Arthur presses on unaware and Gaius (Richard Wilson) must use his own magic to save his ward. But while things pick up considerably from this point, 'Another's Sorrow' is badly lacking in action, falling into the trap of having Arthur and his men walk a little, set up camp, press on further and so on for much of its runtime. We get the briefest of skirmishes 30 minutes in and some decent action at the climax - Arthur's final bout with Odin is suitably tense and epic - but it's too little, too late. Last week's 'The Death Song of Uther Pendragon' was also relatively light on action, but provided the viewer with some meaty emotional scenes as a substitute. 'Another's Sorrow' offers up nothing so substantial - the complete absence of Morded only increases the feeling that this is something of a filler episode. That said, it's a filler episode buoyed by solid performances from guest stars Montgomery and Fox - the uncle of Merlin's Morgause, Emilia Fox - and the series regulars never fail to impress. Not the strongest episode of Merlin then, and the weakest instalment of series five thus far, but as a piece of Saturday night entertainment, 'Another's Sorrow' passes 43 minutes pleasantly enough.

NO ROMANCE ALLOWED Movie Binge!
For all the anti-Valentines Lovebugs out there! There have been some amazing cards for the Cupid's Countdown event, so I hope mine isn't a disappointment. I signed up to share some of my favorite un-romantic movies for those of you who just aren't in the mood for cute hearts or cupids. I get it. Sometimes it's just too much! Thankfully I've got enough recommendations to fill up your date night (or your I-don't-have-a-date-and-I-don't-care night). I added some tv recs as well in case you need to binge several hours' worth of entertainment. No Romance If you want something fun that doesn't have a romantic sub-plot, you should definitely check out... Big Hero 6- A kid loses a brother but gains a robot friend. So it's mostly fun. Captain America: Winter Soldier- An American hero takes down... America. Brave- This girl really does not wanna get married. She just wants to shoot things. Tokyo Godfathers- Fun Christmas tale about homeless people and an abandoned baby. The Emperor's New Groove- A man and a llama save the day. Ghostbusters 2- Somehow all of New York is convinced to be happy for 5 minutes. TV series: Fullmetal Alchemist, Agent Carter Pair with popcorn covered in melted discount chocolate, beer, and buddies. Anti-Romance If you're in the mood for a movie where everything you love dies or that friendship is more important than feelings, I've got good news for you! Harold and Maude- A rom-com about depression and death. Brilliant! Thelma & Louise- Two gal pals murder someone and go on the run. Salt- Will they or won't they? Try is she a spy or is she a spy? I think she's a spy. Bachelorette- Three kind of bitter bachelorettes ruin their friend's wedding. Batman: The Dark Knight- The world is absurd and everything you love dies. TV series: Master of None, Elementary Pair with wine and something covered in garlic- because you're not kissing ANYONE! The opposite of a Rom-Com... Is disturbed and depressing I guess. Watching these will make you forget your troubles, because you'll be concerned with things that are much worse. The Road- People eat people after the apocalypse. Saw- Wanna see the hot guy from A Princess Bride get tortured? Sure you do! Silence of the Lambs- More cannibalism! The Virgin Suicides- Spoiler: somebody dies. No Country For Old Men- Nothing good happens but nobody gets eaten. TV series: Broadchurch, Black Mirror Pair with comfort food and a well-lit apartment. EXPLOSIONS Car chases! Stuff getting blown up! Anything romantic takes a back burner to quippy one-liners and excessive bullets everywhere! Die Hard- Yippee ki-yay motherf------! Deadpool- Despite those misleading ads, Deadpool is about dick jokes and grenades. Aliens 2- DO YOU WANNA SEE AN ALIEN COME OUT OF SOME GUY'S GUT!?!?!?! The Avengers- Do you wanna see a lot of aliens ruin New York City? TV series: Jessica Jones, Homeland, BBC Sherlock. Pair with shots and a good drinking game. Hope that covers all your Anti-Valentine's Day needs! Honestly I had so much fun putting this list together. Thank you Lovebugs for being part of such an awesome event, and lots of love to @nicolejb and @AlloBaber for making it happen!
