The Runaway
He's a runaway Has been his whole life Keeps telling himself someday he'll stop He'll finish this race But he'll do it on his own pace Or at least that's what he says Because that's what helps him sleep at night Keeps telling himself his future is bright Keeps telling himself one day he'll see the light Who knows? Maybe he shall Maybe he shan't Maybe he can't stop running Cause it feels as if the darkness is gunning for him Like it's hunting him He can't slow Into the night he goes Chasing the moon Maybe he'll reach it soon Who knows? Maybe he shall Maybe he shan't Maybe he can't reach it For that glimmer of hope in the night Also seems to run in fright The moon is a renegade Betraying this runaway Leaving him behind with the dark Leaving him to fend for himself Maybe he can pretend to be happy Who knows? Maybe he shall Maybe he shan't Maybe he can't Because on this road there is only despair This road has been worn beyond repair No prayer could mend this street No prayer could mend the runaways feet They've taken a beating for too long With every step he leaves behind a piece of himself And with it peace seems out of reach But maybe he'll find it Who knows? Maybe he shall Maybe he shan't Maybe he can't Maybe he is just a runaway Maybe he'll run until he fades away Who knows? Who knows?

Very cool @IanRichardson There was definitely the question of "maybe he will, maybe he won't, does anybody know?" infused in here at nearly every level. Which worked really well! Repetition does well for that, and I was pulled into the story by the question that kept coming up. Of course, I hope the answer is "maybe he shall!"
