You'll Never Guess What People Eat At The Movies Across The Globe
Yuck. There are hundreds of countries around the world sitting in movie theaters across the globe. One big difference is the food they eat while in the audience. From dried bugs to salted candies, world customs really have their own distinct palette. Though Americans believe there's nothing in the world that could be better than a nice bag full of buttery popcorn, they are in for a huge surprise. Check out the movie theater snacks from around the world. You're going to be shocked. USA: Salted, Buttery, Popcorn It's crunchy. It's addicting. It's SO American. Popcorn is a very traditional snack without a ton of calories...that is, if you don't drench it in a pool of butter and salt. Popcorn has had a long standing reservation in our culture, primarily since corn is such in abundance within our country. We've muti-purposed corn to be just about anything but popcorn is still our favorite creation. Just remember, a small popcorn won't get you through intermission. A large popcorn will make you feel fat. But who cares, right? Great Britain: Sugared Popcorn Why am I not surprised that Great Britain would have a seamlessly more proper snack? Compared to American, the Brits always seem to do the exact opposite. From my personal view, I just don't understand the thrill of sugary popcorn. However then again, kettle corn and caramel corn is a huge success in the States. Brits are notorious for their bitter drinks such as coffee and tea paired with a very decadent and sweet dessert. I guess it's only fitting, pinkies up. Japan: Iwashi Senbei The first idea that popped into your mind was probably not that these are sardine rice crackers. The crisps are baked in sugar and soy sauce to give them their distinct taste. Rice is a very traditional food within the country so it's no surprise it is a snack as well. And with Japan being a very dependent country on its seafood industry, it's obvious that a leading snack brand would be fish based. Still interesting. Brazil: Roasted Ants Okay GROSS. As an American, I will never understand the love for eating bugs. We get it, they are packed with a ton of protein and have a nice crunch. But it's so taboo in American culture. On the other hand, Brazilians loves them. It's an aphrodisiac, or food that stimulates sexual desire, which could be the reason for why Brazilians are such a fan. Talk about a passive aggressive way to show your date that you want to hook up. Norway: Dried Reindeer Meat Somewhere in the North Pole, Santa is crying. This food seems so fitting though for the region. Reindeer meat is cut and then dried for a chewy taste. Very similar to beef jerky in the States. Reindeer meat boasts very low fat and high protein. However, I can't seem to feel sympathy for Rudolph & his gang once they find out that the Norwegians are snacking on their friends. Guess Norway is going to become the land of misfits toys soon enough... South Korea: Dried Cuttlefish I guess this goes hand in hand with popcorn in the Asian nation. With a meaty texture and briny flavor, apparently South Koreans can't get enough. It can be seasoned in a variety of flavors. Though they're also fans of roasted chestnuts, dried cuttlefish still frequently comes out as the fan favorite. I still don't know what a cuttlefish is. Russia: Beluga Caviar This is reserved for the rich and only the rich but a very common wealthy delicacy. Though the average folk may not be accustomed to eating the beluga caviar themselves, they know exactly who is receiving it when they attend the movie theater. Apparently movies in Russia are a more fancy affair, something Americans and other world countries would gawk at. With Russia being known to have extreme customs, this one tops the cake. Greece: Souvlaki Okay, this looks delicious. Lamb or beef souvlaki will be a fit for an Grecian attending an outdoor movie. They're tender and savory and it's already making my mouth water. Grecians are notorious for having the best food in the world and it's no surprise that their movie theaters also come with a wide delicious variety of choices. Please fly me to Greece because I'm starving. Netherlands: Salty Licorice This could be the most hated snack in America. Black licorice is a very distinct taste that very few people enjoy. In America, our black licorice contains a lot of sugar. However in the Netherlands, they salt their licorice with ammonium chloride which gives eaters a tongue-numbing sensation. Is this candy a drug? No thank you. India: Samosas This is my favorite. Look how good that looks! Bollywood theaters are all the rage in India far more popular than any Western movie. Samosas are potato stuffed pastries that taste as good as they look. With Bollywood movies comes a delicious combo of chutney and cheese sandwiches and vada pav, potato fritters in a bread bun. I could definitely ship this idea in the USA.
Indian Samosas..Famous Indian patties with the filling of vegetables and spices.
Samosa, the most loved Indian appetizer with a crisp crust and savory potato stuffing. When you make such fried fast food at home, you get to make some changes to make it healthy. Here are some Whole Wheat Aloo Matar(potato and peas) Samosas for you to try at home and savor them as much as we did. Ingredients: Whole Wheat Flour/Atta - 1 cup Carom Seeds/Ajwain/Owa - 1 tsp Ghee/Clarified Butter - 1/2 tbsp (optional) Olive Oil or any other Oil - 1/2 tbsp Potatoes (Russet) - 2 medium Green Peas - 1/2 cup Coriander Powder - 1/2 tsp Cumin Powder - 1/2 tsp Black Pepper Powder - 1/4 tsp Ginger (grated) - 1/4 tsp Garam Masala - 1/4 tsp Turmeric - 1/4 tsp Green - 1 Coriander/Cilantro Leaves - few sprigs Salt Oil for frying How to make Samosas: Making Samosa Crust: In a mixing bowl, add whole wheat flour, carom seeds and little salt. Heat ghee and olive oil in a small pan. Add this hot (not warm) ghee and oil to the wheat flour and mix with a spoon. This hot oil will make the crust crisp. When it turns cold enough to handle, add water and knead to form a soft pliable dough. You can add more oil if you like. Too soft dough will make the crust soggy. Cover and let the dough rest for 15 - 20 minutes. Generally, all purpose flour/maida is used for Samosa crust. I prefer whole wheat flour as it has more nutrients. Preparing Stuffing for Samosas: Microwave green peas in a microwave safe bowl for about 2 minutes or until peas are cooked. I used frozen green peas. Boil potatoes until soft, do not overcook them. Let the potatoes cool completely. Finely chop green chilli and coriander leaves. I prefer Russet potatoes for Samosas and Vada Pav(one more popular Indian Recipe). In a mixing bowl, add cooked peas, mashed potatoes, coriander powder, cumin powder, ginger, black pepper powder, turmeric, garam masala, green chillies, coriander leaves and little salt. Mix well and taste for salt and other spices. Assembling Samosas: Divide the dough into 6 - 8 balls. Roll each ball into an oval shape, slightly thin. Cut each one into two parts, making 12 - 16 samosas. Apply a drop of water to the edges and form a cone shape. Stuff one of them with the Aloo Matar stuffing and seal it as shown in the picture. Deep fry this stuffed samosa in medium hot oil. If the crust turns soft, roll it more thinner. Repeat the same for other dough balls. Serve hot Vegetable Samosa with Mint Coriander Chutney and/or Tamarind Chutney and/or ketchup.
Easy Grilled Chicken Breast
A fast and tasty curry and a much faster grill time imply that is a meal around the table in no time in any way! Allow chicken to marinate 30 minutes to 4hrs. Meatless Monday Recipe: Lasagna Rolls with Seasonal Greens
Living in Southern California, I am truly horrible at knowing which fruits and vegetables are and aren't in season. I'm also horrible at knowing which recipes are and aren't seasonally appropriate. This is why, embarrassingly enough, I'm throwing up cards for grilled watermelon in the middle of January and teaching you how to make ice cream in December. Thankfully, Isa of Post Punk Kitchen is a New Yorker, and as the Northeast is getting hit by a particularly nasty winter, she knows exactly what to recommend. It's spinach season! It's basil season! And fortunately, this recipe for green lasagna rolls uses both in quite the abundance. Whip it up at home, and share some with me. (Promise?) -------------------------------------------- Green Lasagna Rolls 12 oz lasagna noodles For the white sauce: 1 cup cashews, soaked for at least 2 hours 1/2 cup water 2 teaspoons cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon salt For the pesto: 2 cloves garlic 3 cups fresh basil, loosely packed 1/2 cup pepitas (shelled pumpkin seeds), plus extra for garnish 1/3 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon salt Several dashes fresh black pepper For the ricotta: 1 14 oz extra firm tofu, crumbled 1/4 cup pesto 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon salt For the spinach: 2 tablespoons olive oil 6 cloves garlic, minced 10 oz baby spinach Make the noodles: Bring a big pot of salted water to boil and cook the noodles al dente, stirring occasionally to make sure they don’t stick together. If they seem to be, use metal tongs to gently peel them apart. Once cooked, drain them in a colander and run them under plenty of cold water to make sure they stop cooking and don’t stick together. Make the white sauce: Drain cashews. In a blender, combine all ingredients and blend until completely smooth. This could take 1 to 5 minutes depending on your blender. Scrape down the sides of the blender with a rubber spatula every minute or so to make sure you get everything. Set aside. Make the pesto: Place garlic cloves in a blender and pulse a bit to chop. Add basil, pumpkin seeds, olive oil, nutritional yeast, lemon juice salt and pepper and blend. It should still have some texure and not be completely smooth. Thin with a few tablespoons of water to get it into a spreadable consistency. Make the ricotta: In a medium mixing bowl, mash tofu with your hands or an avocado masher, until it resembles ricotta cheese. Mix in pesto, nutritional yeast, olive oil, lemon juice and salt until well combined. Set aside. Make the spinach: Preheat a large heavy bottomed skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium low heat. Add the olive oil and garlic and saute until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add spinach and cook, stirring often, until wilted, about 3 minutes. Set aside. Assemble and bake: Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch casserole dish with olive oil. Spread 3 tablespoons of ricotta mixture evenly over each lasagna noodle, leaving a little room around the side edges and 1/2 inch at each end. Scatter about 3 tablespoons of spinach mixture over the ricotta. Starting at the bottom end, roll noodle up and place, seam side down, in the casserole dish. Continue with all remaining noodles. Pour the white sauce over the rolls in thick ribbons. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until edges are lightly browned and white sauce is thickened. If after 25 minutes the rolls are not browning but the edges are crispy, place under a broiler on low heat for a minute or two, keeping a very close eye so that they don’t burn. Remove from oven and smother on remaining pesto. Garnish with additional pumpkin seeds and serve!
What Are The Ridiculous Reasons Why These Kids Are Crying?
If you've ever babysat, parented, or pretty much existed within the general vicinity of a child for more than two minutes, you probably know that babies cry for the most nonsensical reasons. So do parents using Snapchat, who take that 24/7 baby-documenting that social media moms and dads are notorious for to a whole new level. They take a picture of their kid crying, they caption it with exactly WHY they're crying, share the picture, and boom. Instant hilarity. This is why people get convinced that babies and drunk adults are the same. Hey, you've got to let them teethe somehow, right? To be fair, waiting for freshly baked things to cool down is pretty much the worst. If it's a single-digit AM number, I'd be like this too. Imagine all the possibilities if you COULD though. He's not REALLY bad. Just a little misunderstood, right? Cue that 'Game Of Thrones' chant: "Shame! Shame! Shame! Shame!" It's okay. She's going to be grateful she didn't when she's older. I'd probably collapse on the floor too. The freakin' PRESIDENT! Hey, it doesn't mean he can't be upset! I feel like a LOT of little girls think they can marry their dads. I know some grown men that would cry because of this too. I appreciate how easy it is to entertain kids. "Here's a tampon." I like that he's all ready with his little fork too. Okay, but this picture actually made me want a pet lobster. Go away, brother! You're ruining the ambiance! This girl just needs to grab control of her life. AND her fork for that matter. So have you been around a little one who cried for stupid reasons? Or maybe YOU were that little one? I know my dad always reminded me of the first time he shaved off his mustache. I cried for hours because he didn't look like my dad anymore! @VIPFreak2NE1 @YumiMiyazaki @TurtleyTurtles @AlexTalley @atmi @CelinaGonzalez @iixel @humairaa @LysetteMartinez @drummergirl691 @ZoilaObregon @AnimeFan4Evr @SarahRegulski @poeticandfunny @tokyo514 @Outcastname @RachelParker @FrankilliMambo @EasternShell @supbroscene @Baoyi @VeronicaArtino @YunBao @buddyesd @HandsomeBacon
