On a trail that towers over Machu Picchu in Peru, you can climb the "Stairs of Death." Sound scary? It kind of is. Check out the video above to see what towering heights you'll dealing with.
Huayna Picchu (sometimes called Wayna Picchu) towers over Machu Picchu. There is an ancient staircase, the so called Stairs of Death, that reportedly climb 1,000 feet in less than a mile. This steep trail is kind of trecherous, but totally worth it!
If you want to do more than just this small hike, you could so the 26-mile Inca Trail, the most famous trek in South America, that leads to Machu Picchu. There are guided treks that vary from 2 to 5 days; you must reserve these in advance.
If you're going to climb Huayna Picchu, make sure to take some water. If you have any injury (kness, anckles, etc.), it's not recommended. If you aren't physically prepared, go slowly, walk normally and don't give up! After 40-50 minutes, you will get to experience unforgettable views. The trail is a challenge, though, if you're afraid of heights.
Note that only 400 people a day allowed on the mountain, so schedule way ahead of time. It is crowded, though; that's the only downside. Even in the low season it is crowded. Go first thing in the AM, and you might find your ascent slightly less crowded.
