According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, sitting down for more than three hours a day can shave a person's life expectancy by two years, even if he or she is physically active and refrains from dangerous habits like smoking.
We've all been told that getting 30 minutes of exercise a day is invaluable to our health, but what about what we do with the other time in our day? If you're sedentary or sitting the other 15 hours a day, you're still going to be at risk for serious health side effects!
Researchers have found that people who worked 10 years in sedentary jobs, or jobs that don't require a lot of physical energy, had twice the risk of colon cancer and a 44% increased risk of rectal cancer, compared with people who had never worked sedentary jobs.
I understand that most of us are in jobs or schools the require us to stay sitting for long periods of time, but try to stand as much as you can. Stand up when you're on the phone, get up and talk to someone instead of emailing them, take your lunch break as an opportunity to walk.
