Predicting Weather with Nature's Tricks

Learn some more about how to predict the weather using some tricks taught to us by the Redneck Archaeologist (seriously).
Though his name may sound silly, he has some good tips! Pay attention to:
- Ring around the moon (read more about this here)
- How low a bird is flying: High in the air means clear; low means bad weather is coming.
- Birds land and huddle together, bad weather and cold weather is coming. Often happens the day before.
- Squirrels gather food 1-2 days before.
- Leaves on trees crinkle and curl before rain. Trees do this to help funnel the water. Different trees and bushes might do different things depending on the weather. Normal rain is just a little bit of crinkling, but ahead of bigger storms might cause heavier drooping or crinkling.
Glad it helped everyone!
Very, very helpful--I also only knew about the birds!
So cool! I wish I had his kind of wisdom.
I love that he calls himself the redneck archaeologist
Huh! I never thought of looking at the leaves before. I've checked the birds before, but not the leaves.

3 Fun Outdoor Hairstyle Ideas
It's never too early to prepare for Fall. My friends and I just started thinking about outdoor activities during Fall and here I am looking through hairstyles for hiking. I'm that excited. Also, I want to share my curated list to everyone because I thought some of you might be interested in changing up your hairstyles for your fall classes or activities such as biking, rock climbing or yoga. Medium to Long Hair: Easy Pulled Back Ponytail If you're hitting the hills or biking this one is perfect. Your hair will look good for hiking photos and it's not to shabby for a post-hike meal at a diner. This is also a no-fuss helmet hairstyle. Buns are too snug. Styling Instruction: 1. Pull the crown of the hair into a ponytail. 2. Then flip hair through the ponytail. 3. Repeat until the hair at the nape is also pulled back. Tip: The ponytail should be stack on top of the previous tail. Curly Hair: Braidout Ponytail I know how annoying it is to have hair brushing on your face. Even though my hair is not voluminous I get pretty irritated by the piecey strands bugging my forehead. This is why i can't do bangs because I'll end up clipping them up most of the time. If you have the same problem, try this cute hairstyle by AlleySinai. She braids the front and bring it back into a half ponytail. You can also pull it back into a ponytail if you want to keep the hair off your shoulder. Short Hair: Fringe Braid Ponytail Same concept with the braidout ponytail except you're only braiding one part of the bang. Then tie the rest of the hair back in a ponytail. This one doesn't have to be perfect There you have it.
Agathis lanceolata - Serpentine forest kauri, Koghis kauri, Kaori de forét (French)
Conservation Status Red List Category & Criteria: Vulnerable Agathis lanceolata has a history of exploitation for its timber and has undergone a decline in its extent of occurrence (EOO), area of occupancy (AOO) and quality of habitat. Its EOO is estimated to be 5,378 km², based on herbarium specimens and field observations. Overexploitation has led to a significant decline in numbers of individuals, habitat degradation and habitat conversion, extent of occurrence and area of occupancy. The subpopulations are severely fragmented, as more than half the individuals are in small and isolated patches. The estimated total population is less than 10,000 mature trees. Each of the main subpopulations contains much less than 1,000 mature individuals. Taken together, these data indicate an assessment of Vulnerable. Agathis lanceolata is concentrated in the southern massif of New Caledonia with outlying localities in Province Nord on the Boulinda and Mé Maoya massifs and the Col Maré. Occurs at altitudes ranging from 200 to 1,100 m. The total population is estimated to be less than 10,000 mature individuals with no subpopulation with more than 1,000 individuals. A large emergent tree restricted to dense humid rainforest on ultramafic substrates. The species has a history of overexploitation. Although plantations have been established, illegal logging is still a problem. Habitat fragmentation due to the effects of repeated fires and land clearance is another problem with most subpopulations restricted to fragments of primary forest, generally in sheltered valleys. This species was heavily exploited for is valuable timber, especially in the 19th and 20th century. Plantations have been established in southern New Caledonia. Four of the main subpopulations are protected within reserves at Saille, Rivière Bleue, Mt Ongone and Thy. These are all low altitude sites in the southern part of its range.
Thuja plicata - Western Red-cedar, Canoe cedar, Giant arbor-vitae, Giant cedar, Pacific red-cedar, Shinglewood
Conservation Status Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern Despite extensive logging, the extensive range and abundance of Thuja plicata makes it ineligible for any threatened category and it is therefore assessed as Least Concern. The two more or less disjunct areas in which this species occurs: Pacific coastal mountains and Rocky Mountains, experience a different climate and therefore sustain different forest types. The mostly much wetter (winter rainfall, up to 6,600 mm p.a.) and milder coastal ranges support the tallest conifer forests in the world, with Sequoia sempervirens in the southern part exceeding 110 m and with Abies grandis to 80 m, Abies procera 85 m, Picea sitchensis 87 m, Pinus lambertiana 75 m, Pseudotsuga menziesii 100 m, and Tsuga heterophylla to 80 m tall. Many of these trees also exceed any of their congeners elsewhere in overall size (Van Pelt 2001). Thuja plicata, with max. 75 m, is one of the longest-lived in these forests, with veteran trees often in excess of 1,000 years. Other conifers in these coastal forests are Chamaecyparis lawsoniana (extreme southern part of range), Xanthocyparis nootkatensis, Calocedrus decurrens, Abies amabilis, Pinus monticola, Tsuga mertensiana, and Taxus brevifolia in the understorey. Common angiosperm trees are Acer macrophyllum, Alnus rubra along rivers, and Populus trichocarpa; in the shrub layer are especially abundant Vaccinium spp., Rubus spectabilis and Ribes bracteosum. Deep layers of mosses and liverworts cover the forest floor and lower sections of tree trunks as well as fallen logs, on which latter most conifers find the only substrate to germinate. In the interior Abies grandis, Abies lasiocarpa, Larix occidentalis, Picea engelmannii, Picea glauca, Pinus contorta, Pinus ponderosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca, and Taxus brevifolia are the most commonly associated conifers. Here annual precipitation does not exceed 1,200 mm and winters are much colder than along the coast. This species is common especially in the coastal sections of its extensive range and somewhat less so in the interior parts. (Selective) logging of mature trees and 'old growth' forest in which this species is a codominant continues in many areas where the forest is not on protected land. In situations where secondary forest growth is managed to favour other species (e.g. Pseudotsuga menziesii), this would lead to a decrease of occupancy of Thuja plicata. Plantation forestry focusing on this species should eventually reduce the level of exploitation of natural stands, in particular in 'old growth' forest with its high ecological value. At present this species is not considered to be in danger of extinction. The wood of this species provided the main building material for the Amerindian tribes along the Pacific coast, who developed a technique to split large planks from the lower boles of big trees without destroying the trees themselves. Nowadays, its main use is for making shingles used in roofing residential buildings; as in most Cupressaceae, the wood is decay-resistant and easy to work. For large construction purposes it is less suitable as it tends to split, but it can be used for a variety of smaller utilities from garden sheds, glass houses, and furniture to tools. Western Red-cedar has been used in forestry plantations in some countries in NW Europe on a rather limited scale; it requires high rainfall and performs best in the wetter parts of the British Isles. Thuja plicata has been widely planted as an ornamental tree in parks and large gardens. It is also suitable for hedges as it grows back quickly from clipping. Fewer cultivars are known from this species than from Thuja occidentalis, but it is nevertheless of substantial importance in the horticultural trade. This species is present in many protected areas, including some famous National Parks in both Canada and the USA.
Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah
The ksar, a group of earthen buildings surrounded by high walls, is a traditional pre-Saharan habitat. The houses crowd together within the defensive walls, which are reinforced by corner towers. Ait-Ben-Haddou, in Ouarzazate province, is a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco. Located in the foothills on the southern slopes of the High Atlas in the Province of Ouarzazate, the site of Ait-Ben-Haddou is the most famous ksar in the Ounila Valley. The Ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou is a striking example of southern Moroccan architecture. The ksar is a mainly collective grouping of dwellings. Inside the defensive walls which are reinforced by angle towers and pierced with a baffle gate, houses crowd together - some modest, others resembling small urban castles with their high angle towers and upper sections decorated with motifs in clay brick - but there are also buildings and community areas. It is an extraordinary ensemble of buildings offering a complete panorama of pre-Saharan earthen construction techniques. The oldest constructions do not appear to be earlier than the 17th century, although their structure and technique were propagated from a very early period in the valleys of southern Morocco. The site was also one of the many trading posts on the commercial route linking ancient Sudan to Marrakesh by the Dra Valley and the Tizi-n'Telouet Pass. Architecturally, the living quarters form a compact grouping, closed and suspended. The community areas of the ksar include a mosque, a public square, grain threshing areas outside the ramparts, a fortification and a loft at the top of the village, an caravanserai, two cemeteries (Muslim and Jewish) and the Sanctuary of the Saint Sidi Ali or Amer. The Ksar of Ait- Ben-Haddou is a perfect synthesis of earthen architecture of the pre-Saharan regions of Morocco. Criterion (iv): The Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou is an eminent example of a ksar in southern Morocco illustrating the main types of earthen constructions that may be observed dating from the 17th century in the valleys of Dra, Todgha, Dadès and Souss. Criterion (v): The Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou illustrates the traditional earthen habitat, representing the culture of southern Morocco, which has become vulnerable as a result of irreversible socio-economic and cultural changes Integrity (2009) All the structures comprising the ksar are located within the boundaries of the property and the buffer zone protects its environment. The earthen buildings are very vulnerable due to lack of maintenance and regular repair resulting from the abandonment of the ksar by its inhabitants. The CERKAS (Centre for the conservation and rehabilitation of the architectural heritage of atlas and sub-atlas zones) monitors, with difficulty, respect for the visual integrity of the property. Authenticity (2009) In comparison to other ksour of the region, the Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou has preserved its architectural authenticity with regard to configuration and materials. The architectural style is well preserved and the earthen constructions are perfectly adapted to the climatic conditions and are in harmony with the natural and social environment. The large houses in the lower part of the village, with well conserved decorative motifs, are regularly maintained. The construction materials used still remain earth and wood. The inclination to introduce cement has so far been unsuccessful, thanks to the continued monitoring of the «Comité de contrôle des infractions» (Rural Community, Town Planning Division, Urban Agency, CERKAS). Only a few lintels and reinforced concrete escaped its vigilance, but they have been hidden by earthen rendering. Particular attention is also paid to doors and windows giving on to the lanes, to ensure that the wood is not replaced by metal. Protection and management requirements (2009) Protection measures essentially relate to the different laws for the listing of historic monuments and sites, in particular the Law 22-80 concerning Moroccan heritage. The Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou currently has a five-year management plan (2007-2012). This management plan is the result of two years of reflection and workshops involving all the persons and institutions concerned with the future of the site, in particular the local populations. The recommendations of this plan are being implemented. Furthermore, two management committees have been established (a local committee and a national one) in which all the parties are represented and cooperate in decision-making. As well as managing the property, CERKAS ensures coordination in the implementation of this management plan. visit our site for more informations...
