TBT: Fashion Icons of the Early 2000's
We all remember the early 2000's, and the girls who set the trends for us in our Teen People magazines. Forget Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston; for those of us who were at the most impressionable ages of 10 to 16 in the aughts, these teen idols ruled our worlds, and the clothes they wore made us want to dress and be like them. Let's take a group throwback and look at some of the teens and tweens who dictated early aughts fashion. Amanda Bynes In Amanda's heyday, she was quite the tween idol, and had a pretty recognizable style on top of that. Brightly printed pants and skirts were her thing, only turning to denim in the form of an often-worn stonewash denim jacket. Her tight-fitting tees were the understated point on her outfits, which were always topped off with mini ponitails and braids on the top of her head that didn't not resemble antlers. Jessica Simpson In the days of "Newlyweds," Nick and Jessica were a couple we all thought would last, and Jessica's All-American fashion sense seemed like everything. Though her off-duty tracksuits and trucker hats showed a disinterest in fashion, her southern stagewear was all the rage. Who else here bought a pair of cowboy boots hoping we could get the Daisy Duke look? No? Just me? Hilary Duff As Lizzie McGuire, Hilary Duff seriously influenced many of our tween years and, consequentially, what we chose to wear. Like Amanda, Lizzie wore many a wacky updo, but combined them with accessories galore, from headbands to hairclips to layered necklaces. For clothes, she had a much more pseudo-bohemian thing going on, wearing peasant tops and blouses with bell sleeves to match her bell bottoms. Mandy Moore This actress didn't have anyone fooled with her occasional belly shirts; she was a good girl at heart and we knew it and loved her for it. She encouraged us to go ahead with that bob or pixie cut; how else would we show off our favorite chandelier earrings. Her fashion sense was sugary sweet to match her personality, and she definitely encouraged me to wear more pink. Britney Spears It didn't matter if she wore jumpsuits or miniskirts or spandex or lace; what Britney had, we all wanted. Her style was a neverending whirlwind of sex appeal, which many of her fans were too young to understand at the time, but we knew we would never be her. Rhinestones and a bare midriff seemed like the key to her style, but who knows, the next day she might be wearing head-to-toe leather. Oh Britney, you always kept us guessing. Rihanna Remember when Rihanna frist blew onto the scene with "Pon de Replay" in 2005 and our worlds were changed forever? Forget what a true style star she is today; Ri Ri's early style made us all want to wear tops that began and ended with our boobs, toned down with baggy pants and chunky kicks. Never forget oversized hoop earrings, which were the ultimate sign your style was "funky". Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen When Mary Kate and Ashley neared the end of their reign of movies together, they were at the height of their tween popularity. We couldn't all have a beautiful identical twin to coordinate outfits with, but we could crimp our hair and layer short sleeves over long sleeves and look almost as cute as them. Lindsay Lohan Who didn't covet Lindsay's punk-meets-pop style in the days of Freaky Friday? Her long red locks were too cool (especially with blonde streaks), and her cargo pant, tight top combinations were to die for. So early 2000's, so lovable. If only we knew how little we'd be seeing her in ten years. ...and then we have Christina Aguilera, and I don't know what I can say about her look, other than that my mother definitely didn't want her to be my style icon. Everything about her was sexy, cool, and dirrty. I stayed in the Lizzie McGuire style, but who did you model yourself after?
Twitter's Biggest Celebrity WAR
"Gun in my purse, b*tch I came dressed to kill...." On July 21st, Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to release her frustrations with the MTV VMAs nominations. Minaj is largely upset that her music video "Anaconda" was not nominated for Best Choreography and Best Video of the Year when it definitely should have been. Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" hit 19.6 million views in the first 24 hours breaking all previous VEVO records. The next to break Minaj's VEVO records was Taylor Swift which is why when Minaj refers to "girls" in her tweets, it's why many think is ultimately a poke at Swift. The "Anaconda" video caused a media storm filled with men sexualizing Minaj, women critiquing, thousands of memes, celebrity mockery, and Minaj risking her self image. Everyone who was anyone talked about that video and was OBSESSED. However, MTV Video Music Awards still didn't nominate her video. Ridiculous. This isn't the first time a video that deserved a nomination was snubbed. Katy Perry's "Roar" was not nominated last year when the view count for her video broke multiple records. She took to Twitter last year prior to the awards upset over the nominations. It has now opened the gates for all artists to feel comfortable to use their voice to call out the award show when they know they deserved a nomination. Minaj called out the award show saying that she has done everything the other nominees have done in her series of tweets but because she is black, she's been discriminated against and everyone knows it : It all started out with Minaj pointing out the flaws in how nominees are selected... Then Taylor Swift swooped in and reprimanded Minaj's tweets in the stance of faux-feminism. Minaj responded proving that Swift was in the wrong. Swift tried to make it about herself completely missing Minaj's point. And yet in all of the chaos, Kim Kardashian still managed to get involved... Ryan Seacrest jumped in siding with Swift which led to a swarm of attacks at Seacrest. He eventually deleted his tweet that victimized Swift and made Minaj look like she was attacking and weak. Yikes. And then Meek Mill thought it'd also be appropriate to throw shade at Drake. Horrible timing. Of course Bruno Mars tried to lighten the situation by launching a fake Twitter fight against Ed Sheeran. Aaron Paul invited the girls to pancakes. Indirectly, they were all mocking the girls and their behavior. They got to sit back and watch the show unfold... Katy Perry favorited Bruno Mar's tweet amidst the criticism of Taylor Swift. SHOCKER. "Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it." Fans are NOT HAPPY with the nominations or Taylor Swift. In the past, Best Music Video of the Year is the top award for genre-defining videos. It's been given to Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance", Katy Perry's "Firework", Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)", and Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U" in the past. Minaj is simply pointing out that nominations should be given and awarded to artists who are getting it based off of achievement. That's what an award show is for. Do you think Minaj is in the right? I think so.
Beyonce's Lemonade: Cheating, Forgiveness, and Growth
Don't have an hour to watch Beyonce's new visual album? It's okay, I did for you. (Though really, you should find time...) I went into this film knowing nothing about the plot, and I feel like it is best if you do the same. Below the cut on each block I provide the transcription. Certain parts are quite long so for the full spoken work, please visit Bustle. Intuition We begin with hauntingly silent images. There is no movement and you find yourself holding your breath without realizing. Here starts the monologue that chronicles a cheating relationship from the very start. Song lyrics: "I pray you catch me whispering." --------------- "I tried to make a home out of you but doors lead to trap doors, a stairway leads to nothing. In the tradition of men in my blood, you come home at 3 a.m. and lie to me. What are you hiding?" Denial Our leading woman transforms from her previous state. She jumps into the water, sheds her old clothes and becomes a different woman. She tries to just absorb the situation, to not let it affect her, to ignore it away. She dons a yellow dress and takes a baseball bat to the entire town. She's over the denial stage. Now, she's mad. Song lyrics: "What's worse, looking jealous or crazy?" "Can't you see there's no other man above you? What a wicked way to treat the girl that loves you." -------- I tried to change, closed my mouth more, tried to be softer, prettier, less awake. But still inside me, coiled deep, was the need to know... are you cheating on me? Cheating? Are you cheating on me?" Anger Now we're taken to a deserted car park, where our leading woman scares the shit out of us. She spits of how stupid her lover was to lie to her, HER of all people! That he's not going to get away with it, that he doesn't know who he just messed with. In the midst of fire and darkness we are intimidated as hell. Song lyrics: "I'll give you one more try, you know I'm your life You try this shit again, you 'gon lose your wife." -------- If it's what you truly want... I can wear her skin over mine. Her hair over mine. Her hands as gloves. Her teeth as confetti. Her scalp, a cap. We can pose for a photograph all three of us. Immortalized... you and your perfect girl. Why can't you see me? Why can't you see me? Everyone else can." Apathy Now that she's sufficiently made whoever cheated on her terrified for their lives, leading lady gets on a school bus "to the club" and lets us know that she no longer "gives a fuck." She's over it and moving on. Song lyrics: "Middle fingers up, put them hands high Put it in his face, tell him "boy, bye!'" -------------------- So, what are you gonna say at my funeral now that you've killed me? Here lies the body of love of my life, whose heart I broke without a gun to my head. Here lies the mother of my children, both living and dead. Rest in peace, my true love, who I took for granted." Emptiness We return to the car park, filled with flames. We flash back and forth between the car park, a mansion, and a long red hallway. She seems like she's in a trance and the fear-inducing attitude she had has faded. Song lyrics: "She just killed everybody in here and I was her witness" --------- She sleeps all day. Dreams of you in both worlds. Dear moon, we blame you for floods... for the flush of blood... for men who are also wolves. We blame for the night, for the dark, for the ghosts. Loss We're taken into the city and discover our leading lady is dealing with this blow by working her ass off. She throws herself into her craft, she's the best, she's "worth every dollar." But then our red hallway is set on fire - she's burning a house down. Song lyrics: "She's too smart to crave material things, stackin' her paper" ----------------- Every fear... every nightmare... anyone has ever had. Accountability We're in a mansion, we're in a neighborhood, we're in the past and present. We hear of a child wanting desperately to be like her mother, to be strong for her, to be a woman that is not bent and broken by any man in their lives. Father, friend, or husband. Song lyrics: "Came into this world, daddy's little girl. Daddy made a soldier out of me." ----------------- You find the black tube inside her beauty case where she keeps your father's old prison letters. You desperately want to look like her. You look nothing like your mother. You look everything like your mother. Your mother is a woman and women like her cannot be contained. Did he bend your reflection? Did he make you forget your own name? Did he convince you he was a god? Am I talking about your husband or your father? Reformation From the loud anthem of accountability, we're taken back to stark silence. We're in an empty stadium as we watch our leading woman come to terms with what is happening. She tries to see the other side, if there is another side. Perhaps if she changes her view she can change the situation. Song lyrics: "9 times out of 10 I know you're lying, and 9 times out of 10 I know you're trying, So i'm trying to be fair." "Cause you are my life line." ----------------- Why do you deny yourself heaven? Why do you consider yourself undeserving? Why are you afraid of love? You think it's not possible for someone like you. But you are the love of my life. You are the love of my life. You are the love of my life. Forgiveness We're taken to a peaceful place filled with books and music, a fire place. This is where our leading lady accepts and forgives. She is willing to try again but only if its a real try, if they're both committed. Jay-Z now makes his appearance. Confirming that this isn't fiction - Beyonce isn't playing any role but her own. Song lyrics: "And your heart is broken cause I walked away Show me your scars and I won't walk away And I know I promised that I couldn't stay, baby Every promise don't work out that way." ------------- Baptize me... now that reconciliation is possible. If we're gonna heal, let it be glorious. Do you remember being born? Are you thankful for the hips that cracked? Resurrection In resurrection we are shown women holding their lost loves ones (including the mothers of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown and countless others.) A new beginning, but never forgetting. --------------- So how we supposed to lead our children to the future? What do we do? How do we lead them? Love. L-O-V-E, love. Hope Now Beyonce is determined to move forward with power, new strength, and freedom. She will not let her freedom "rot in hell." She will get everything she deserves, everyone will get what they deserve. Song lyrics: "Freedom freedom cut me lose Freedom freedom where are you cause I need freedom too." ---------- The nail technician pushed my cuticles back... turns my hand over, stretches the skin on my palm and says, "I see your daughters and their daughters." Redemption The wounds have closed and Beyonce says that the process, while it was heart breaking, has made her stronger, opened her eyes, and gave her a new purpose. The concept of Lemonade was inspired by her grandmother. She was a strong woman who made lemonade since her life gave her plenty of lemons. --------------------- Grandmother, the alchemist, you spun gold out of this hard life, conjured beauty from the things left behind. Found healing where it did not live. I had my ups and downs, but I always find the inner strength to pull myself up. I was served lemons, but I made lemonade. My grandma said "Nothing real can be threatened." True love brought salvation back into me. With every tear came redemption and my torturer became my remedy. So we're gonna heal. We're gonna start again. You've brought the orchestra, synchronized swimmers. After you've digested this, how do you feel about this open letter about infidelity?
The Disease That Kept Avril Lavigne in Bed For 5 Months
Four months after Avril Lavigne hinted at health issues in a series of tweets, the singer revealed that she is suffering from a severe case of Lyme disease. In an interview with People, Lavigne explained that she had been feeling exhausted and lightheaded for months, and up until October, doctors were unable to figure out what was going on. “I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool [at my 30th birthday party], I had to leave and go lie in bed,” she told People. “My friends asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ I didn’t know.”Soon after, the doctors diagnosed her with a severe case of Lyme disease, a bacterial infection transmitted by ticks. Lavigne surmises that she was bit by a tick last spring. “I had no idea a bug bite could do this,” she said. “I was bedridden for five months.”“I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move. I thought I was dying.” Now Lavigne is recovering at home in Ontario, and she’s “80 percent better,” she said, thanking her fans for all their support while she was MIA. “The get-well messages and videos they sent touched me so deeply.” How to protect yourself from ticks: Avoid Direct Contact with Ticks - Avoid wooded and bushy areas with high grass and leaf litter. - Walk in the center of trails. Repel Ticks - Treat clothing and gear, such as boots, pants, socks and tents as well as exposed skin with approved insect repellants. Find and Remove Ticks from Your Body - Bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors (preferably within 2 hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that are crawling on you. - Conduct a full-body tick check using a hand-held or full-length mirror to view all parts of your body upon return from tick-infested areas. - Examine gear and pets. - Tumble clothes in a dryer on high heat for an hour to kill remaining ticks.
