Three days after suffering a severe stroke, Claude sadly lost his battle for life. He was reported as being in a deep coma following his illness and passed away yesterday morning. His death was confirmed by the Belgian Prime Minster Charles Michel, who described him as ‘a great champion.'
The Belgian riders Claude Criquielion competed as a professional cyclist between 1979 and 1991 and reached his pinnacle when he took the world road race championship at Barcelona in 1984.
Despite his many successes, the image many will remember of him is when he crashed during the finishing sprint in the 1988 world road race championships. He and Steve Bauer (Canada) were sprinting for the win and the latter appeared to edge him into the barriers.
@AnthonyB Check out the videos if you haven't, they will give you some insight on his style.
@troygreene84 That always seems to be on people's minds. They forget he was a great rider
Didn't really know of him, but he seemed like a great cyclists. Rest in peace
Sad news. RIP
I remember him suing that Canadian rider because he thought he did it on purpose. Sorry to see him go though
