Chains
I sit in a dark cold cell staring at my hands Disgusted by the deeds they've committed The deeds I've committed So I sit in chains Held in a prison of my own design Held in a prison for my own crimes Held in a prison of my own mind But I'm not truly trapped Because I have the keys They're right in front of me and all I have to do is reach... But I don't It's impossible to escape when you are your own jailer I stay of my own accord Or maybe I stay because I'm too afraid to leave Too afraid to be free Too afraid to mess up again So I sit in this cell I don't reach for the key I just stare at my chains I just stare at my hands

Wow. Powerful piece. We so often put ourselves in shackles, either deserved or undeserved. I really enjoyed the extended metaphor style that this piece took on. I'd love it if you could add this to Creative Writing as well so I can showcase it next week in my weekly featurings!

I really like this part: "It's impossible to escape when you are your own jailer / I stay of my own accord / Or maybe I stay because I'm too afraid to leave" So strong, and so relatable.
