Newcastle United defender Jonas Gutierrez has praised the support and standing ovation he received at St. James Park in Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United. Gutierrez was out for 17 months under chemotherapy and surgery to remove one of his testicles after a tumor and subsequent testicular cancer were found. His teammate and fellow Argentine Fabricio Coloccini then preceded to hand Gutierrez the captain’s armband when he came on in the 65th minute.
The plaudits for Gutierrez were far and wide, including Manchester United keeper David De Gea after the game. There are moments when life transcends football and football becomes more than a sport. The two are forever intertwined and Wednesday night provided a good example of one of those moments. It’s just a wonderful sight to see the 31 year old not only beat the disease but return to what he loves doing so afterwards and the support for him has been absolutely ace.In light of all the bad that we’ve heard come out of the football world last month, this story is one to eradicate the negative for sure.
@Spudsy2061 How was the reception?
@CitySarajevo I just watched it tonight. Was a great moment to see him get the ovation and the captain's armband.
Great to see. Didn't catch the game.
